Gabriel Basso’s Bold Take on Hollywood’s Political Stance
Gabriel Basso, the actor who brought Vice President JD Vance to life in Hillbilly Elegy, has strong opinions on the intersection of Hollywood and politics.
The 30-year-old actor starred in the 2020 film adaptation of Vance’s memoir, which came out before Vance’s election to the Senate.
Now, Basso says Hollywood should steer clear of politics and believes that actors, in particular, should focus solely on their craft.
Hollywood Needs to Focus on Entertaining, Not Politics
Basso recently made it clear on the podcast Great Company that he thinks celebrities should keep their political views to themselves.
“You should be quiet, you should do your job.
You should be a jester, entertain people.
Then shut the f**k up,” he said.
He further explained, “We’re court jesters.
We’re entertaining. We’re public servants.
We’re there to perform, to entertain.
” Basso compared actors to jesters in a courtroom—there to entertain, not to decide the direction of the country.
“We’re saying words that we’re told to say, we’re told how to say them, we’re told where to stand.
And then we’re telling people how to vote?”
Meeting JD Vance: A “Cool Dude” but a “Weird” Experience
While Basso and Vance have met in person, the actor admitted it feels strange to now be so tied to Vance’s story.
“When he’s thinking about his life— they made a movie of his book, and my name will always be in the description,” he told Variety.
Despite the awkwardness, Basso says Vance is a “cool dude,” and the two connected over their shared Midwestern roots.
While Vance hails from Ohio and Kentucky, Basso grew up in Missouri, and they both bonded over their rural upbringing.
Taking Shots at Public Officials
Basso’s criticism isn’t just limited to Hollywood.
He also expressed frustration with public officials who, in his view, fail to represent the people properly.
“You need us, like you should be representing me in a form of representative government. What are you doing?” Basso asked, adding, “It feels like they’re dictating us.”
Basso’s Big Break with The Night Agent
After Hillbilly Elegy, Basso moved on to starring in The Night Agent, a Netflix series that has been doing incredibly well.
The show’s second season hit the streaming platform’s Top 10 TV series list in the US shortly after its January 23 release.
Surprisingly, The Night Agent’s first season also re-entered the Top 10, making it a major hit for Netflix.
JD Vance’s New Role on the Global Stage
Meanwhile, JD Vance has been making waves in global politics as well.
At the Munich Security Conference, Vance shifted his focus from foreign threats like China and Russia to what he sees as a domestic crisis. “If you’re running in fear of your own voters, there is nothing America can do for you,” he said, discussing the erosion of free speech and democratic institutions.
“This continent faces right now, the crisis I believe we all face together, is one of our own making.
” Vance’s remarks reflect his ongoing culture war, which he continues to bring to a global stage.
