Former Spanish Football President Banned for Three Years by FIFA

Former Spanish Football President, Luis Rubiales, has been banned from all football-related activities for three years by FIFA, after an incident involving an unauthorized kiss and other controversies.

This ban comes after months of intense scrutiny and a criminal investigation in Spain.

The Controversial Kiss:

During Spain’s Women’s World Cup final win over England in August, Luis Rubiales kissed female footballer Jenni Hermoso on the lips without consent, causing outrage and overshadowing Spain’s World Cup victory.

FIFA initially banned him for 90 days but extended it to three years.

Rubiales’ Resignation:

Amidst mounting criticism, including a statement by several Spain players refusing to play for the national side until he was removed, Rubiales resigned as the Spanish federation president on September 10.

He also stepped down from his role as a UEFA vice-president, having been provisionally suspended by FIFA pending investigations.

FIFA’s Statement:

FIFA stated, ‘The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has banned Luis Rubiales… from all football-related activities at national and international levels for three years, having found that he acted in breach of article 13 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.’

Rubiales has the option to request a motivated decision within 10 days, and the decision may be subject to appeal.

Criminal Investigation:

Rubiales, aged 46, is still under criminal investigation in Spain and denies any wrongdoing.

He was recently handed a restraining order preventing him from going within 200 meters of Jenni Hermoso or contacting her.

This order followed allegations of sexual assault and coercion filed by the footballer.

Inappropriate Post-Match Celebrations:

Besides the kiss, Rubiales also stirred controversy by carrying Spain player Athenea del Castillo over his shoulder during post-match celebrations and was caught on camera making an inappropriate gesture.

These actions were witnessed by Queen Letizia of Spain and 16-year-old Princess Sofía.

In this news report, we see how a seemingly celebratory moment turned into a major scandal for Luis Rubiales, leading to his resignation as Spanish federation president and a significant ban from FIFA.

The incident highlights the importance of consent and appropriate behavior in the world of sports and underlines the consequences for those who fail to uphold such standards.
