The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has appointed Lai Mohammed, the former Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism in Nigeria, as the Special Advisor to Zurab Pololikashvili, the Secretary General of UNWTO.


The announcement was made during the commencement of the 66th UNWTO Commission for Africa (CAF) in Mauritius.

Lai Mohammed brings to the position a wealth of experience, having actively engaged with UNWTO for seven years, contributing significantly to various functions within the global tourism body.

Contributions and Achievements of Lai Mohammed

During his involvement with UNWTO, Lai Mohammed has achieved notable milestones.


One of his accomplishments was organizing the 61st UNWTO CAF Meetings in Nigeria in 2018.

Furthermore, he played a pivotal role in hosting the first UNWTO Global Conference on Linking Tourism, Culture, and Creative Industries in Lagos the following year.

These events helped showcase Nigeria’s potential as a tourism destination and facilitated discussions on the interplay between tourism, culture, and creative industries on a global scale.

Responsibilities in His New Role

In his new capacity as Special Advisor, Lai Mohammed will be working closely with UNWTO Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili to advance the Agenda for Africa program.

A primary objective of this initiative is to enhance Africa’s significance in the global tourism economy.


Among his responsibilities, Lai Mohammed will be involved in devising strategies for sustainable and secure tourism in the post-COVID-19 era.
