The slain officers were identified as Inspectors and were part of a joint operation with the military in Magami, a community near the Niger Republic.

The bandits, suspected to have ties to the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP), ambushed the security operatives during the operation.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, in the early hours.

Details of the Ambush

The tragic ambush took place in Magami, an area bordering the Niger Republic, making it easier for the bandits to escape when confronted with resistance.

The joint patrol operation, known as Operation Hadarin Daji, was aimed at countering banditry and criminal activities in the North-West region.

This operation was coordinated by the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

The police inspectors who lost their lives in the attack were reportedly members of the source’s unit.

Identity of the Slain Officers

The police source disclosed the names of the deceased officers as Inspector Suleiman Audu, Inspector Sanusi, Inspector Tanzin Audu from Nasarawa State, Inspector Dashi, and Yahaya Ibrahim.

Lack of Confirmation from Zamfara State Police Spokesperson

Upon contacting the Zamfara State police spokesperson, Yazid Abubakar, he neither confirmed nor refuted the report.

He stated that he could not comment on the incident as it was a joint operation led by the Defence Headquarters.

Recent Attacks in Zamfara State

The attack on the police officers comes shortly after another incident where seven soldiers were reportedly killed during a confrontation with bandits in Zamfara State.

The bandits had invaded Kangon Garacce, a community in the Dangulbi district of Maru Local Government Area, and killed numerous residents.

In response to a distress call, Nigerian Army troops were dispatched to assist the villagers but were ambushed by the bandits, resulting in the loss of seven soldiers’ lives.
