First-Time Lawmaker Moses Sule Elected as Speaker of Plateau State House of Assembly

Sule, who represents Mikang State Constituency and previously served as the vice chairman of Mikang Local Government Area, was chosen for the position during the assembly’s session on Tuesday.

Fom Gwottson, the member representing Jos South constituency, was also elected as the deputy speaker during the brief inaugural ceremony.

Following the oath-taking ceremony, Sule proceeded to administer the oath of office to the newly elected legislators.

Composition of the Plateau State House of Assembly

The Plateau State House of Assembly consists of a total of 24 members.

Of these, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) holds 16 seats, the All Progressives Congress (APC) holds seven seats, and the Young Progressives Party (YPP) holds one seat.

Court Reinstates Nuhu Abok as Plateau Speaker

Meanwhile, Nuhu Abok has been reinstated as the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly by a Plateau High Court.

Abok had previously been impeached by the assembly in October 2021.

However, Justice M. L Musa ruled that the impeachment was illegal and therefore null and void.

The court also awarded costs amounting to N1.5 million for appearance and N138,000 for filing the matter against the defendants.

Abok’s Reaction and Appreciation

Upon his reinstatement, Speaker Abok expressed his gratitude to the people of Plateau for their support during his ordeal.

He highlighted that the court’s decision vindicated him from the illegal impeachment and emphasized the need for peaceful proceedings in the assembly.

Abok affirmed his willingness to work harmoniously with the executive, stressing that unity among the members was essential for the peace and progress of the state.

He emphasized that the court’s ruling had clarified the situation surrounding the purported impeachment.
