Expert advocates research to curtail diabetes in children

The Nigerian government has been called upon to support pediatricians to conduct more research to find the cause of children suffering from diabetes milletus.

A Consultant Pediatric and Endocrinology Professor Abiola Abiwole made the call at the 5th Annual General meeting and Scientific Conference -SPAEN in Abuja,

The Nigeria Professor Abiwole said “we need to do more research to know the reason for increase of diabetes in children and we need government to support
us to do more research to help Nigerians“.

Prof Abiwole said that prevelence of diabetes in children has been indentified in some states in Nigeria.

“We are able to see that there are some areas where we have more children suffering from diabetes mellitus for example Lagos, Partharcourt, Abuja, Kano and Abakiliki_ Ebonyi state are areas were sixty percent of children in our registry are from these states”.

She added.

The essence of the annual general meeting and Scientific Conference is to create awareness on Nigerians to know that children do have endocrine problems and their are group of doctors trained to manage diabetes in children so as not to develop any complications associated with diabetes.
