Migration Surge Propels London’s Population: Centre for Cities Report Highlights Shift in Capital’s Demographic Trends

A recent report by the Centre for Cities suggests that London’s population has likely surpassed its pre-pandemic peak of 10.1 million, marking a significant rebound from the Covid-induced exodus experienced during lockdowns.

Reversal of Pandemic Exodus

Amid the upheaval caused by lockdowns and remote work, London saw a decline of 75,000 residents between mid-2019 and mid-2021.

However, by mid-2022, approximately 66,000 of those residents had returned, with net migration to the capital from both overseas and other parts of the UK playing a significant role.

Migration Trends Fuel Population Growth

The report highlights that net migration to London from overseas remained positive throughout the pandemic, contributing to the city’s population rebound.

The increase in outflows from the capital during the pandemic is described as an amplification of existing trends rather than a significant departure from previous patterns.

Future Population Projections

With pandemic restrictions easing and professionals gradually returning to the office, the appeal of leaving London has diminished, leading to speculation about potential population overshoot in the coming years.

Official projections suggest that net migration will continue to drive population growth, potentially reaching 70 million by mid-2026.

Government Policy and Migration Outlook

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) projects significant population growth based on current migration trends, but these estimates could be influenced by government policies aimed at curbing net migration.

Despite past pledges to reduce migration levels, the current trajectory suggests continued population expansion driven by migration influxes.
