An 85-year-old pensioner recently faced an unexpected disappointment while trying to plan a solo trip to Butlin’s in Skegness.

Malcolm, who has enjoyed family visits to the holiday resort for the past three years, discovered that solo travelers are only allowed on weekends.

The news was particularly disheartening for him, as his wife is currently battling cancer, and his son has exhausted his annual leave.

A Loyal Visitor’s Frustration

Malcolm reached out to the resort to inquire about a few nights away during the week.

His hope was to enjoy the entertainment and relaxing atmosphere that Butlin’s offers.

However, when he called, he was told that he couldn’t visit alone from Monday to Friday.

“I really enjoy my trips to Butlin’s—the evening entertainment is great, and it’s a lovely place to stay,” he shared with BBC Radio Sussex.

Unfortunately, his request to make an exception for older solo travelers was met with a firm denial.

Butlin’s Policy Explained

In response to Malcolm’s situation, a spokesperson for Butlin’s issued a statement expressing regret over the circumstances.

They explained, “We don’t allow single travelers on our family breaks unless they are linked to a booking where children are also on the break.”

This policy left Malcolm feeling frustrated, especially considering his willingness to comply with the rules.

Costly Weekend Alternative

Malcolm had hoped to book a weekday stay for around £75, but instead, he learned that if he wanted to visit alone, he would need to do so on a weekend, which would cost closer to £300.

Additionally, he was informed that even if he booked a room for two and his companion couldn’t make it, he would still be denied access.

Despite offering to pay a supplement, Malcolm found that this option was not available to him.
