Actor and musician Earl Cave has spoken candidly about how the devastating loss of his twin brother, Arthur Cave, continues to shape his life more than a decade after the tragedy.
Now 26, Earl says his decision to embrace Christianity is closely tied to the emotional aftermath of losing his brother, describing his faith as something deeply connected to his trauma.
In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Earl explained that becoming a Christian two years ago gave him a renewed sense of hope and purpose.
He said the beliefs in forgiveness, life after death, and spiritual comfort have helped him navigate grief in ways he never expected.
Finding Comfort Through Faith
Although he was not raised in a church-going household, Earl revealed that he gradually found himself drawn to Christian worship as an adult.
What began as occasional visits eventually became a weekly routine, with church attendance now forming an important part of his life.
According to Earl, his faith provides reassurance that life extends beyond death, a belief he acknowledges may stem directly from the pain of losing Arthur.
He also said prayer and focusing on the well-being of others have helped strengthen both his values and emotional resilience.
Arthur Cave’s Death Changed the Family Forever
Arthur Cave died in July 2015 after falling from a cliff near Brighton shortly after taking LSD for the first time. An inquest later concluded that the teenager’s death was accidental.
Evidence presented during the hearing showed Arthur had become severely disoriented after taking the drug and also had cannabis in his system.
Witnesses reported seeing him moving erratically near the cliff edge before climbing over a safety barrier and falling into Ovingdean Gap.
Police said he had become so confused that he struggled to distinguish reality, sending a final message asking, “Where am I?” before the fatal incident.
Despite emergency medical treatment at Royal Sussex County Hospital, Arthur died from catastrophic injuries that included a fractured skull and severe brain trauma.
Nick Cave’s Music Became an Outlet for Loss
The death of Arthur profoundly influenced the work of his father, acclaimed Australian musician Nick Cave.
His 2016 album Skeleton Tree explored grief and emotional devastation, becoming one of the most personal projects of his career.
Arthur’s mother, fashion designer Susie Cave, also channelled her loss into her creative work.
After the closure of her well-known label, The Vampire’s Wife, she recently introduced a new venture, Susie Cave Weddings & Funerals, inspired in part by themes of love, loss and remembrance.
Another Family Tragedy Followed Years Later
The Cave family experienced another heartbreaking loss in 2022 when Nick Cave’s eldest son, Jethro Lazenby, died at the age of 31.
Jethro, whose mother was Beau Lazenby, had publicly struggled with schizophrenia and substance addiction.
He died in Melbourne shortly after being released from prison, adding another painful chapter to the family’s history.
Nick Cave Has Also Turned to Spiritual Reflection
While Nick Cave has stopped short of identifying himself as a Christian, he has previously spoken about finding peace within the church.
He has described religious spaces as places where he feels able to express sorrow, uncertainty and hope without judgment.
Reflecting on losing both Arthur and Jethro, the musician has admitted to wrestling with feelings of responsibility despite recognising that tragedy cannot always be prevented.
He has said that parents naturally question whether they could have done more because protecting their children feels like their most fundamental duty.
Nick has also acknowledged that Arthur was not known for drug use before the fatal incident, describing him simply as a young teenager whose death followed an isolated and tragic experience.
Public Grief Brought Unexpected Support
Following Arthur’s death, the Cave family relocated from Brighton to Los Angeles, explaining that remaining close to the location of the accident became emotionally overwhelming.
Nick has previously said that the intense public attention surrounding the tragedy initially felt intrusive but eventually prevented him from withdrawing completely from the world.
He later reflected that surviving Arthur’s death helped him endure the loss of Jethro, giving him confidence that it was possible to continue living despite unimaginable grief.
Earl Continues Building His Own Career
Away from his family’s personal history, Earl Cave continues to establish himself in film and music.
He appears as Ralph in the coming-of-age drama Sunny Dancer, starring Bella Ramsey, and recently completed work on the family drama Alma.
Alongside acting, Earl performs with his band, Bell Practice, a name inspired by the church bells that once rang near the home he shared with bandmate Mimiko McVeigh.
He has also dismissed concerns about being labelled a “nepo baby,” saying he refuses to let comparisons with his father’s celebrated career discourage him from pursuing music.
For Earl, creating art remains a meaningful part of his identity and his ongoing journey toward healing.
