A routine driving lesson in Warren, Michigan, ended in tragedy when a 62-year-old father was accidentally struck and fatally injured by the car his 18-year-old daughter was learning to drive.
The father was reportedly teaching his daughter how to parallel park in the 24000 block of Warner Avenue on Sunday afternoon when the accident occurred, according to police.
Daughter Was Behind the Wheel of Toyota Camry
Warren Police said the teenager was driving a 1998 Toyota Camry during the lesson when she allegedly struck her father.
The vehicle dragged the man a short distance before the daughter brought it to a stop. She remained at the scene and cooperated with emergency responders when they arrived.
Police were called at around 4pm following reports of the incident.
62-Year-Old Father Dies in Hospital
Emergency crews treated the injured man before transporting him to a nearby hospital.
Despite efforts to save him, the 62-year-old was later pronounced dead at the medical facility.
Authorities have not publicly identified either the father or his daughter.
Police Rule Out Drugs and Alcohol
Investigators have indicated that neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to play a role in the fatal incident.
Police said the family, including the teenage driver, has been cooperating fully with the investigation. Preliminary evidence also appears to be consistent with the daughter’s account of what happened.
No charges have been filed at this stage.
Investigation Into Fatal Crash Continues
The Warren Police Department’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has additional information to contact Det. Vandervord at 586-574-4741.
The investigation will determine whether any further action is warranted.
Fatal Crashes Continue to Make Headlines in Michigan
The tragedy comes amid a series of serious traffic incidents reported across Michigan in recent weeks.
On September 14, 78-year-old Ray Woodrow Jr. was accused of fleeing after striking a pedestrian in Wayne County. His bond was set at $10,000, with another court hearing scheduled for September 29.
Around the same period, another crash in Kalamazoo left one person dead and two others injured, including a 10-year-old child.
For the Warren family, however, what began as an ordinary attempt to teach a young driver an important skill ended with the devastating loss of a father.
