Danilo reflects on Pep Guardiola’s influence as he credits the legendary coach for transforming his football career at Manchester City

When it comes to modern football, few managers have had the impact of Pep Guardiola.

The Spanish tactician has redefined the game with his meticulous approach, shaping teams that dominate possession and control the pitch with surgical precision.

His methods have brought him unparalleled success at Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, winning multiple league titles and Champions League trophies.

But while his philosophy has been celebrated, some critics argue that it stifles individual creativity.

However, for those who have played under him, Guardiola’s influence is often described as transformational.

Danilo’s Experience Under Guardiola

Former Manchester City defender Danilo is one such player who credits Guardiola with changing the way he sees the game.

In a recent interview, the Brazilian captain jokingly admitted that he was “brainwashed” by the coach—but in the best way possible.

“Pep Guardiola educates his players,” Danilo shared in an interview with The Guardian.

“That’s the most important thing about his work. He makes all players think about football in the same way.”

The veteran full-back detailed how Guardiola instilled a deep understanding of key footballing principles such as space, movement, possession, and ball control.

“He makes you understand the spaces on the pitch like no other coach and he lives the game emotionally like no other coach,” Danilo added. “I was brainwashed by Guardiola, but in a good way.”

Success at Manchester City and Beyond

During his time at Manchester City, Danilo played a role in the club’s dominant run, winning two Premier League titles, two Carabao Cups, an FA Cup, and the Community Shield.

Though his stint at the Etihad lasted only two seasons, he managed to make his mark, contributing four goals and three assists across 60 appearances in all competitions.

Following his departure from City, Danilo continued his career at some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

He had already secured two Champions League titles and a Club World Cup with Real Madrid before moving to England.

Later, after leaving Manchester, he went on to win two Serie A titles with Juventus.

Now back in Brazil with Flamengo, the experienced full-back has collected an impressive 22 senior honors over his career.

A Career-Changing Influence

Looking back, Danilo admits that working under Guardiola had a profound impact on his footballing mindset.

He even speculated that had he played under the Spanish manager earlier in his career, his journey might have been even more successful.

“It was like I was at university,” he reflected. “What I experienced with him allowed me to raise my level and keep that level to this day.”

Danilo openly acknowledged that before arriving at Manchester City, his perspective on the game was entirely different.

“It’s not that I was an idiot before I arrived at Manchester City, but I realized that I played football in completely the wrong way,” he admitted.

“If I had met him before, he would have made my life a lot easier. I’m so glad I was able to play under him and learn from him.”

Guardiola’s Lasting Legacy

Danilo’s words echo the sentiments of many players who have worked under Guardiola.

While his methods may be intense and demand absolute commitment, they often leave a lasting impact that reshapes a player’s career.

As football continues to evolve, Guardiola’s influence remains undeniable, not just in the trophies he’s won, but in the way he has changed the very fabric of the sport.
