The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has expressed its support for calls by organizations like the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation and OUTA to urgently dissolve the City of Johannesburg Council.
DA’s Motion to Dissolve the City Council
The DA announced its intention to table a motion to dissolve the City of Johannesburg Council, citing governance failures and the need for improved service delivery.
Crisis in Johannesburg: Road Collapses and Service Delivery Issues
Councillor Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, the DA Johannesburg Caucus Leader, highlighted issues such as collapsing roads, a lack of adherence to council rules, and city-owned buildings catching fire due to poor maintenance.
Unpaid Debts: City’s Alleged Failure to Pay Eskom
Furthermore, the DA alleges that the city has not paid Eskom in full despite imposing high rate increases on residents.
Formal Motion and Urgent Call for Action
The DA confirmed its intention to formally table the motion at the programming committee meeting on 17 November 2023. They urgently call on the Speaker to schedule a debate and vote on the motion.
Appeal for Cross-Party Support
The DA appeals to all political parties to support the motion, emphasizing the need for a fresh election to address the instability that has hindered service delivery.
Collaboration with OUTA and Ahmed Kathrada Foundation
The DA intends to reach out to the authors of the letter and offer its collaboration in efforts to rescue Johannesburg from its current challenges.
Resolving the Crisis Through Council Action
Councillor Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku stressed that the Joburg council has the power to resolve the crisis without national government intervention. She called for unity in the interest of the city and the need to go back to voters for a fresh election.
