Customers Slam Dublin’s Temple Bar Pub Over Skyrocketing Prices for Guinness and Other Drinks After Viral Receipt Goes Public

A receipt shared online from one of Dublin’s most famous tourist destinations, The Temple Bar Pub, has sparked outrage.

The receipt showed that five pints of Guinness had been charged at a whopping €49.75 (£41.70), which works out to €9.95 (£8.34) per pint.

This has led many to accuse the pub of overcharging, with some calling it the “biggest rip-off in the country.”

What Was on the Tab?

Aside from the five pints of Guinness, the customer’s bill included other drinks like a pint of Harp Lager (€10.95), a Bailey’s (€10.85), a Smirnoff vodka (€9.95), and a soft drink (€4.45).

The total came to a staggering €85.95 (£72.05).

To put it in perspective, the average price of a pint of Guinness in Ireland is €5.77 (£4.84) as of May 2024, making The Temple Bar Pub’s prices nearly double that.

The Public Outcry

The receipt has gone viral after being posted on social media, with over 110,000 views and more than 140 comments.

Many users voiced their displeasure, with one person stating they specifically avoided the pub due to the high prices, opting for more reasonably priced places for Guinness instead.

Another compared the pub’s prices to the notoriously expensive pubs in Covent Garden, London.

Some users took it even further, calling the pub “the biggest rip-off in the country,” and suggesting that the prices were only fueled by the presence of tourists willing to pay.

Opinions on the Price Tag

While most reactions were negative, some defended the pub’s pricing, calling it more of a “tourist attraction” than a traditional pub.

One user even suggested that the €9.95 price was acceptable when you factored in the live music and atmosphere.

Others recommended venturing a bit further from Temple Bar, where there are pubs offering more reasonably priced drinks.

A Look at the Bigger Picture

The controversy comes at a time when Guinness has been hard to come by in the UK due to supply shortages around the holiday season.

Shoppers rushed to stock up, fearing they’d miss out on their pints during the festivities.

This sparked even more discussion about the cost of Guinness, with many feeling the pinch both at bars and supermarkets.

The Future of Temple Bar Pub?

While The Temple Bar Pub remains a must-see spot for many visitors, it’s clear that some patrons are rethinking whether the prices are worth the experience.

Whether this backlash will lead to price changes or alternative destinations remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—the conversation around Dublin’s beloved Temple Bar is far from over.
