The All Progressive Congress (APC) leadership had previously announced Godswill Akpabio as the Senate President and Senator Barau Jubrin as his deputy.

However, some aspirants for the position of Senate President, including Yari, Orji Uzor Kalu, and Osita Isunazo, have opposed the party’s zoning arrangement and allied themselves to challenge Akpabio’s candidacy.

Confusion and Heated Arguments during Camp Meeting

Sources from Yari’s camp have disclosed that on Monday night, a meeting was held among Yari, Kalu, and Isunazo to finalize their position on the nomination.

However, the meeting reportedly resulted in heated arguments and confusion regarding who to support.

Kalu allegedly threatened to withdraw from the group and join the party’s consensus candidate due to disagreements over the nomination.

Arguments between the three aspirants and their sponsors ensued, with those supporting Yari outnumbering those supporting Kalu and Isunazo.

Threats and Offers within the Camp

Kalu reportedly threatened to leave the group if they did not reconsider their decision not to support him for the Senate presidency, despite the party having previously zoned the office to the south.

He argued that it would be religiously insensitive for the former Zamfara governor to occupy the position when both the president and vice president are Muslims.

In response, it is said that Kalu was offered the position of Deputy Senate President, while Isunazo was offered the chairmanship of the Senate Committee on Appropriation.

However, it remains unclear if Kalu and Isunazo accepted the offers.

Potential Fallout in Yari’s Camp

The source from the meeting expressed concern that due to the selfishness and insensitivity displayed by some members of the group, Kalu might ultimately choose to leave.

The source stated that the current situation in their camp could lead to Kalu’s departure, highlighting his disappointment with the group’s approach and its implications for national peace and unity.
