Comedian Josh Widdicombe Reflects on Plymouth Argyle’s Struggles and His First Football Experience in the West Country

This week on Soccer A-Z, Tim Lovejoy and his usual crew were joined by comedian Josh Widdicombe, who had some candid thoughts on the current state of football in the West Country.

Widdicombe, known for his role on The Last Leg, also shared a hilarious but heartwarming story about his first date with his partner since becoming a parent.

Widdicombe’s Lifelong Love for Plymouth Argyle

Josh Widdicombe kicked things off by talking about how he became a Plymouth Argyle supporter.

“I was taken to Home Park when I was eight and it blew me away,” he said, recalling the trip fondly.

“It was mad, especially when you think about how bad the stadium was at the time.”

The comedian explained that his half-brother, who lived in Cornwall, was the reason he started supporting the team.

Plymouth was conveniently located between them, making it the perfect place for the two to bond over football.

Widdicombe’s loyalty to the club was put to the test this season, as the team has struggled significantly.

Currently languishing at the bottom of the Championship table with 19 losses, Plymouth’s season has been filled with highs and lows, including their unexpected win over Liverpool in the FA Cup.

“It’s been a disaster from day one,” Widdicombe admitted, criticizing the club’s budget and the tough task of competing with better-funded teams.

He also mentioned that the managerial change from Wayne Rooney to Miron Muslic came too late to salvage their campaign, although Muslic’s new style of play showed promise.

A Nostalgic Dive into ’90s Football and Tubes’ First Date Story

The conversation took a lighter turn as the group indulged in a bit of football nostalgia, reminiscing about the good old days of ‘90s football.

But it wasn’t just football that had everyone talking. Presenter Tubes shared a funny and unexpected story about his first date with his partner since the birth of their daughter, Molly.

“We had our first night away from Molly, and my partner tells me we’re going to a sound bath,” Tubes laughed.

He went on to describe the experience: “You turn up to a barn with like 10 other people, bring duvets and pillows, and then people start hitting gongs around you.

It was nice, I like that stuff. When I had my heart attack and did rehab, I tried meditation, and I loved it.”

Joe ‘Sheephead’ Worsley couldn’t resist poking fun, saying, “There’s a whiff of hippie-dippie about that,” which had everyone chuckling.
