Airport Arrest and Cocaine Discovery
A woman from Entebbe, Uganda, faced an arrest at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport after authorities found close to a kilogram of cocaine hidden beneath her wig.
Traveling via Nairobi, Kenya, she was apprehended by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials on Tuesday. The confiscated cocaine was estimated to hold a market value of around £844,699.
Operation and Cocaine Concealment
The Mumbai zonal unit of the DRI, acting on specific information, set up a trap at the airport, leading to the arrest of the female passenger.
Remarkable footage captured the moment airport security meticulously dismantled and unraveled the woman’s wig, using a razor to uncover a stash concealed within her hair.
Innovative Concealment Methods Uncovered
DRI officials highlighted their history of uncovering various concealment methods used by smugglers, ranging from hiding substances in items like sanitary pads, whisky bottles containing liquid cocaine, to black cocaine, and even concealing cocaine within moisturizer bottles.
Notably, the woman had hidden cocaine not only in her wig but also in her bra.
Legal Actions and Ongoing Investigation
Under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985, the seized drugs were confiscated, and the woman is currently in custody as investigators delve into the case.
This incident isn’t isolated, as criminals have previously employed wigs as a deceptive way to smuggle drugs through airport security.
Previous Instances and Smuggling Techniques
Instances from the past involving drug smuggling through wigs were highlighted, such as last year’s case in Colombia where two women were caught trafficking cocaine.
They had sewn nearly a kilogram of cocaine into their wigs, and one of them even admitted to concealing additional amounts in her genital area.
The second woman had concealed 650 grams within her wig and another 200 grams wrapped in a white bag hidden inside her vagina.
