Cineworld Plans to Shut Down 25 Cinemas and Cut Hundreds of Jobs Across the UK Amid Financial Struggles

As Cineworld struggles to stay afloat, big changes are on the horizon.

The cinema chain is set to close around 25 locations across the UK and cut hundreds of jobs.

This restructuring plan is expected to be officially announced tomorrow, and it will include immediate shutdowns of about six Cineworld cinemas this summer, according to Sky News.

Many customers have voiced their frustration, pointing to high prices as a major factor in Cineworld’s decline.

Families are particularly feeling the pinch, with trips to the cinema becoming increasingly costly.

A recent example highlighted by MailOnline showed that a family of four could end up spending up to £105 for a 4DX screening of “Inside Out 2” at Cineworld Wandsworth, including snacks and drinks.

That figure doesn’t even cover the cost of special 3D glasses, which are an additional £5 each.

Cineworld is in talks with major commercial landlords like Landsec and Legal & General about the restructuring.

Some landlords are considering rejecting the proposed changes, though it’s uncertain if this will be enough to derail the plan.

The company is working with AlixPartners for guidance on this matter.

Despite the closures, there is hope that other cinema chains might take over some of the vacated Cineworld locations.

In the midst of all this, a Cineworld spokesperson has stated, “We continue to review our options but we don’t comment on rumors and speculation.”

Reactions from the Public

The news of the closures quickly spread on social media, where many moviegoers shared their thoughts.

One user reminisced about more affordable cinema days, saying, “With cinemas being so overpriced and films appearing on streaming services so quickly, I’m not surprised.

Does anyone remember Orange Wednesdays and £1 Saturday morning pictures? Ah, the good old days.”

Cineworld’s Response

In response to concerns about pricing, Cineworld disputes MailOnline’s calculations, suggesting that a Family Special deal could offer a better value.

For instance, the Cineworld Family Ticket allows adults to pay kids’ prices, making it £31.96 for a family of four to see a standard 2D film.

Upgrading to 4DX with this ticket means adults still pay kids’ prices, and families can enjoy enhanced effects like water, wind, and moving seats.

Additionally, a Family Special includes a discount on food.

MailOnline has reached out to Cineworld for further comments.
