US fast-food giant Chick-fil-A is gearing up for a fresh venture into the UK market, marking a renewed effort after its initial foray, a pop-up store in Reading, ended amidst controversy over its historical ties to anti-gay beliefs.

Early 2025: A Pivotal Launch Date

The first Chick-fil-A restaurants are set to grace the UK’s culinary landscape in early 2025, signifying the brand’s inaugural permanent establishment outside of North America.

With over 55 years of experience, this family-owned business operates a robust network of more than 2,800 eateries across the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico, with its hallmark being the beloved Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich.

Aiming for Expansion

Chick-fil-A is embarking on an ambitious plan to open five restaurants in the UK during the first two years post-launch.

Each restaurant is expected to generate between 80 and 120 job opportunities.

As of now, the exact locations of these establishments are yet to be finalized.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that most of the UK sites will operate under franchise ownership.

Revisiting the Controversy

The decision to return to the UK market follows the closure of Chick-fil-A’s pop-up store in Reading’s Oracle shopping centre in 2019.

The controversy arose when gay rights campaigners, organized by Reading Pride, called for a boycott due to the chain’s history of contributing to organizations perceived as anti-LGBT.

The Oracle opted not to renew the lease beyond the initial six-month pilot period in response to the public outcry.

Rooted in Tradition and Charity

Chick-fil-A remains deeply rooted in its founder’s Christian beliefs, as evident in its longstanding practice of keeping its restaurants closed on Sundays, a day designated for rest, family time, or worship for its employees.

In recent years, the company has shifted its philanthropic focus towards education and addressing hunger-related issues.

Notably, in 2020, Chick-fil-A appointed its first vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion, indicating a commitment to embracing diversity and promoting inclusivity.
