Chesney Hawkes Breaks Down on Good Morning Britain
On Thursday’s episode of Good Morning Britain, Chesney Hawkes found himself overwhelmed with emotion as he sat down to chat with hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls.
The 53-year-old singer, known for his hit song “The One And Only,” opened up about grief and music, a combination that led to a tearful moment on air.
A Heartfelt Tribute to a Lost Friend
Chesney shared the heartbreaking news of losing his childhood friend, Vic Irvine, who passed away last month after a brave battle with cancer.
During the interview, the hosts aired a special video of Chesney and Vic enjoying a West Ham cup final game in Prague with their sons.
Seeing the footage brought back fond memories for Chesney, who became visibly emotional.
Looking at the video, he softly murmured, “Oh bless him,” before pausing to collect himself.
Susanna Reid offered comforting words, saying, “Oh, it’s so hard, I’m so sorry, Chesney!” Chesney responded, “Thanks, it’s just so odd that I’m talking about a song about loss right now, at this particular moment in time.
He loved that song.
He told me it was the way he would stay connected with his loved ones.”
New Music on the Horizon
Amid the emotional discussion, Chesney also touched on his upcoming album, Living Arrows, which is set for release on February 28.
One particular track from the album, titled “Loud,” deals with the theme of loss, a fitting tribute to his late friend Vic.
The singer shared that Vic had been diagnosed with lung cancer in 2021, and Chesney posted a moving tribute to him on Instagram after his death.
In the heartfelt message, he wrote, “You may have noticed I’ve been a little off radar recently.
Many of you know my best friend Vic has been ill.
I am heartbroken to say that Vic passed away on Thursday morning.
He did so peacefully, holding hands with his beautiful family. There are no words to describe the pain we all feel, but now is about coming together and supporting his wonderful family through this tragic time.”
The singer also included a video of him and Vic in Prague, recalling it as one of their most cherished memories.
He added, “A day we were all so happy he lived to see and experience as one of life’s biggest Hammers.”
A New Chapter with His Son
In addition to reflecting on loss, Chesney shared some exciting news about his personal life.
He revealed that his 19-year-old son, Indi, has followed in his musical footsteps and is now his lead guitarist.
Indi recently completed his studies at the prestigious Brit School, and Chesney couldn’t be prouder of his son’s musical talents.
“My boy is an incredible guitar player—way better than I ever was,” he gushed.
“He’s now my lead guitar player, and he comes on the road with me. It’s one of my favourite things in life right now to look over on stage and see my boy with his foot on the monitor, throwing guitar shapes.
As long as he deems me worthy, he is welcome on my stage.”
Life Changes and New Music
Chesney also talked about his recent move back to the UK after living in Los Angeles for several years.
He teased his upcoming music, describing it as a blend of pop bangers and reflective songs.
“My kids are going into their 20s now, and some of these songs are like a road map for them,” he explained.
“It’s full of pop band bangers, but there are also songs that had to be written.”
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6 am on ITV1 and can be streamed on ITVX.
