Chelsea produced an explosive attacking display to defeat Bournemouth 5-1 at Stamford Bridge, with Jordan Henderson scoring twice on his home debut and João Pedro also finding the net twice.
The hosts established a two-goal advantage within the opening three minutes, continuing a remarkable pattern of fast starts in the Premier League this season. Cole Palmer helped set the tone by assisting Henderson’s opener before Morgan Rogers doubled the lead.
Despite Bournemouth pulling a goal back, Chelsea’s attacking quality proved decisive, allowing Xabi Alonso’s side to secure a convincing victory.
Henderson Delivers Stunning Performance on Home Debut
Henderson, 36, was an unlikely hero for Chelsea, producing two outstanding finishes after joining the club as a free signing from Brentford.
His first goal arrived just 66 seconds into the match. Palmer drove Chelsea forward before setting up Henderson, who curled a superb effort from around 20 yards into the net via the post.
The midfielder celebrated passionately, putting his hand to his ear before leaping into the air and punching his chest. His team-mates quickly surrounded him, with Rogers among the first to congratulate him.
Henderson had previously earned praise from Rogers, who described him as the best person he had encountered in football during their time together with England.
His second goal was equally impressive. After Palmer won a free-kick approximately 25 yards from goal, Henderson stepped up to curl the ball into the top corner, leaving Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic unable to stop it.
Chelsea Continue Remarkable Trend of Early Goals
Chelsea’s rapid start against Bournemouth added to an extraordinary run of early scoring in the league.
The Blues had taken the lead after just 38 seconds against Fulham, three minutes and 39 seconds against Brighton, 77 seconds against Arsenal and six minutes and 15 seconds against Hull.
Against Bournemouth, Henderson opened the scoring after 66 seconds before Rogers struck 83 seconds later to make it 2-0 after just 149 seconds.
Alonso admitted he had no clear explanation for the team’s ability to begin matches so aggressively.
“I have nothing to do with it so I don’t have the answer,” the Chelsea manager said. “I have no explanation. It has never happened to me in such a short period to score that many early goals.”
Henderson narrowly missed out on a place in Premier League history, as Emile Heskey remains the record-holder for scoring and assisting within two minutes for Leicester against Derby County in April 1998.
Rogers and João Pedro Add to Chelsea’s Firepower
Rogers gave Chelsea breathing space with the second goal, finishing after Henderson supplied the assist.
The hosts maintained their advantage through the remainder of the first half, although Bournemouth continued to threaten and forced Emiliano Martínez into important saves.
Chelsea then struck almost immediately after the restart. Just 29 seconds into the second half, João Pedro converted Pedro Neto’s cross to make it 3-0.
Bournemouth eventually found a way through when Evanilson scored after a costly defensive error by Moisés Caicedo. The Chelsea midfielder, making his first start of the season after recovering from a calf injury, blasted a clearance into the Bournemouth striker, leaving him with a straightforward opportunity.
The goal offered the visitors a brief chance of mounting a comeback, but Chelsea quickly restored their control.
João Pedro scored his second of the match to make it 4-1, turning in a cross from Pep Chavarría and effectively ending Bournemouth’s hopes of rescuing a result.
Martínez Keeps Bournemouth at Bay
Although Chelsea dominated the scoreline, Bournemouth created enough opportunities to test the home side’s defence.
Martínez produced several important interventions, including an impressive double save that denied Rayan and Ryan Christie in quick succession.
Those stops helped Chelsea preserve their substantial advantage and prevented the visitors from building momentum after Evanilson’s goal.
However, the match also exposed a continuing weakness in the Blues’ defensive record.
Chelsea’s Clean-Sheet Problems Persist
Despite the emphatic victory, Chelsea’s inability to keep opponents from scoring remains a concern.
The match extended their run to 22 consecutive Premier League games without a clean sheet. Their most recent shutout had come in a 2-0 home victory over Brentford on January 17.
Bournemouth manager Marco Rose admitted he still believed his side could get back into the contest when the score stood at 3-1.
That sense of vulnerability continues to follow Chelsea, even when their attacking players establish a commanding lead. Alonso’s side can overwhelm opponents going forward, but defensive mistakes remain a recurring problem.
Alonso Praises Henderson’s All-Round Contribution
Henderson’s two goals provided the headline moments, but Alonso stressed that the midfielder brings more to the team than his finishing ability.
The Chelsea manager said the club had signed Henderson for his overall contribution and leadership, adding that the two spectacular strikes were an added bonus.
“We signed him for everything,” Alonso said. “If he’s able to score two beauties, we are more than happy for him. But apart from the goals, he does many, many good things.”
Henderson’s performance offered an emphatic demonstration of his value on the pitch, beyond the experience and leadership Chelsea expected him to provide.
Palmer’s Contract Celebration Overshadowed by Henderson
The match also came shortly after Palmer agreed to a new Chelsea contract running until 2034.
His parents, siblings and girlfriend were present pitch-side to mark the occasion as he emerged from the tunnel before kick-off. However, by the time they reached their seats, Chelsea had already scored twice.
Palmer played an important role in the opening goal and later won the free-kick that led to Henderson’s second strike. Yet he was not the principal goalscorer on a night when his team-mate delivered two memorable finishes.
With Chelsea leading 5-1 during stoppage time, Henderson had another opportunity to shoot from a free-kick roughly 50 yards from goal. Despite encouragement from the home crowd, he chose not to attempt another spectacular effort.
Bournemouth’s Winless League Run Continues
For Bournemouth, the defeat extended a difficult period under manager Marco Rose, with the club still searching for its first league victory under him.
The visitors showed occasional attacking promise but struggled to contain Chelsea’s early pressure and were punished by defensive lapses.
Chelsea, meanwhile, demonstrated the attacking threat that makes them dangerous opponents, even as their defensive record remains a concern.
Henderson’s brace and João Pedro’s two goals ensured the home side left Stamford Bridge with a commanding 5-1 win, while Alonso was left with both reasons to celebrate and defensive issues to address.
