Alleged Abuse in the Spotlight: Charles Hanson’s Trial
Charles Hanson, a familiar face from Bargain Hunt, is facing serious accusations of domestic abuse, with his trial ongoing at Derby Crown Court.
The 46-year-old celebrity auctioneer stands accused of a decade-long pattern of abuse against his wife, Rebecca Hanson.
The allegations include physical assaults, controlling behavior, and emotional manipulation that reportedly started in 2012.
However, Hanson denies all charges, including assault and coercive behavior, claiming that the incidents have been exaggerated.
A Loving Hug or Something More?
Hanson has defended himself by claiming that an alleged headlock incident in June 2023, where Rebecca was pregnant, was not abusive but a “loving hug.
” He stated that his wife had “wild mood swings” during this time and that the physical contact was meant to calm her down.
He argued that his actions were focused on comforting her, not hurting her.
According to him, Rebecca’s accusations were both exaggerated and “crazy,” and he described her as a “fantasist” who struggles with handling stress, including raised voices.
Explosive Claims and Emotional Turmoil
Throughout the police interviews presented in court, Hanson insisted he never physically harmed Rebecca, emphasizing that any instance where his voice was raised, she would claim he was threatening her. However, the prosecution paints a very different picture, alleging that Hanson used his power over Rebecca to intimidate and control her, with violence escalating over time.
Among the accusations are claims of Hanson holding Rebecca in a headlock, leaving bruises on her arm, and even threatening to burn her with embers from their log fire.
Troubling Allegations of Coercion and Abuse
Rebecca has alleged that Hanson’s behavior left her in fear for her safety.
She recalled terrifying episodes, including being gripped tightly enough to leave marks on her skin and being subject to angry outbursts from him.
Yet, Hanson argues that he was not abusive but the victim of emotional manipulation.
In his defense, he described Rebecca as cold, mentally unstable, and occasionally cruel, accusing her of bullying him in recent months and causing him emotional distress.
A Shocking Reversal of Roles
Hanson further asserted that his wife’s mental health struggles had created an untenable living situation, which he described as emotionally draining.
He claimed Rebecca’s actions had made him feel mentally abused, leading him to tears on more than one occasion.
This portrayal of the relationship is at odds with the accusations made by Rebecca, who insists that Hanson’s violent behavior has caused her significant emotional and physical harm.
The Case Continues
As the trial progresses, jurors are hearing two vastly different accounts of the relationship between Charles and Rebecca Hanson.
With charges spanning several years and allegations of escalating violence, the outcome of this case remains uncertain.
Hanson continues to deny the accusations, insisting that he is not the abusive partner in this relationship.
