A family vacation in Cyprus ended in tragedy after a three-year-old British boy died following a fall from the fourth floor of a hotel in the Paphos region.
The child, whose identity has not been made public, was staying at the hotel with his parents when the fatal incident occurred on Sunday evening.
The family had reportedly checked into the hotel on Saturday and were scheduled to remain there until July 25 before the holiday was abruptly cut short by the devastating accident.
Child Fell From Fourth-Floor Corridor Window
According to local reports, the boy was playing with his father shortly before the incident.
During that time, he is believed to have fallen through an open corridor window, landing on the hotel’s main terrace below.
Emergency services were alerted at approximately 6:40 p.m., and the child was rushed by ambulance to Paphos General Hospital.
Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the facility.
Police Open Negligence Investigation
Cypriot authorities immediately launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fall.
As part of the inquiry, the boy’s 37-year-old father was arrested on suspicion of causing death through negligence and engaging in reckless and dangerous conduct.
The father appeared before the Paphos District Court on Monday, where a judge authorized his detention for eight days while investigators continue gathering evidence.
Autopsy Scheduled as Evidence Is Collected
Officials have confirmed that a post-mortem examination is due to take place at the morgue of Nicosia General Hospital.
The findings are expected to help determine the precise cause of death and may play a key role in the ongoing investigation.
Authorities are also expected to hear witness testimony relating to the events leading up to the tragedy as legal proceedings continue.
Family Supported by Relatives During Tragedy
The couple’s five-year-old daughter was reportedly present with the family when the incident occurred.
Also in Cyprus at the time were the child’s maternal grandparents, who had been holidaying with the family in Paphos.
Police have not released further details about the investigation, and no additional information about the child has been made public.
What Happens Next?
Investigators are expected to continue interviewing witnesses and reviewing the circumstances surrounding the fatal fall while forensic findings are completed.
The results of the autopsy, along with other evidence gathered during the investigation, will help determine whether any criminal charges will ultimately be pursued against the father.
