In a recent episode of Hoda Kotb’s *Making Space* podcast, Bette Midler reminisced about a rather awkward experience involving the legendary actress Bette Davis.
The incident took place at Elizabeth Taylor’s 60th birthday celebration in 1986, where both Midler and Davis were guests.
At the time, Midler had just given birth to her second child and was still recovering from the ordeal.
She had thrown together her party outfit without the help of a professional glam squad, which, as it turned out, did not sit well with Davis.
“My mother named me after Bette Davis, and Bette Davis was not thrilled about that,” Midler revealed.
The lack of elaborate hair and makeup for the event seemed to have offended Davis, who was known for her high standards in Hollywood.
Awkward Encounters and Celebrity Conversations
Midler also shared that Davis, who was 78 years old at the time, spent most of the party engrossed in conversation with Bob Dylan. This made Midler, who had previously worked with Dylan on a duet, quite anxious.
“I can’t even imagine what he said to her,” Midler admitted. The whole experience left her feeling a bit hurt.
Family Naming Traditions and Modern Memes
Adding a touch of humor to her storytelling, Midler noted that her sisters were named after actresses Judy Garland and Susan Hayward, while she was named after Bette Davis.
She mentioned the slight difference in pronunciation between her own and Davis’s preferred version of the name.
In a more light-hearted twist, Midler recently made headlines again with a meme.
Responding to J.D. Vance’s comment about ‘childless cat ladies,’ she posted a photo of Taylor Swift with her cat, Benjamin Button, on X (formerly Twitter), playfully captioning it, “Cat Ladies Stand Back and Stand By.” This post was her way of joining the ongoing conversation with a touch of humor.
