Presidential Directive from COVID-19 Palliative Fund
In a recent development, the Presidency has made it known that President Bola Tinubu has given the nod for the release of N3 billion to facilitate the verification process of the National Social Register.
The social register, initiated during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure, is instrumental in cash transfers and various social investment programs.
An official memo dated December 18, 2023, originating from the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, revealed that the allocated three billion naira for the verification of the national social register was sourced from the COVID-19 palliative fund.
Investigation into Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs
Addressing the ongoing developments, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that an investigation is underway concerning the activities of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
The probe comes in the wake of the suspension of Minister Betta Edu over allegations of a N585 million fraud.
Call for Restraint and Patience from Nigerians
Speaking to The Punch on Monday, Onanuga urged Nigerians to exercise restraint and patience during the investigation of Minister Betta Edu.
He cautioned against engaging in a media trial, emphasizing the need to allow the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct a thorough investigation.
Presidential Aide’s Warning Against Media Trial
Onanuga emphasized that President Tinubu has directed the EFCC to investigate the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and urged Nigerians to refrain from conducting a parallel investigation through media trials.
He stressed the importance of awaiting the EFCC’s findings, stating that the President would act based on the results of the investigation.
