The BBC has taken a significant step to support a woman who was vulnerable and had raised concerns about Huw Edwards’ online behavior.
The broadcaster has agreed to cover the cost of therapy for her after she made two complaints about Edwards’ persistent messaging, despite her clear requests for him to stop.
This week, Huw Edwards, known for presenting News at Ten, pleaded guilty to possessing a series of disturbing child abuse images, including one of a boy as young as seven.
This plea could result in a prison sentence of up to 10 years.
The situation has thrown the BBC into turmoil, particularly as it was revealed that the organization continued to pay Edwards a hefty salary of £479,000 annually, even though they were aware of his arrest last November.
According to The Sunday Times, Edwards made efforts to have the woman, known as Rachel, retract her complaints. She initially reached out to him via Instagram in 2018, leading to a correspondence that began as a friendly exchange.
Despite Edwards’ initial responsiveness, Rachel grew concerned, fearing she might be interacting with an imposter.
To confirm his identity, she asked him to wear a pink tie while reading the news, a request he fulfilled. Despite this, their interaction eventually became strained and she found it increasingly ‘toxic.’
Rachel requested multiple times for him to stop contacting her and to block her account, but Edwards continued to message her.
Handling of Complaints and Ongoing Contact
Rachel lodged her first complaint in May 2021, sending a collection of their exchanged messages, including explicit images she had willingly shared. Following this, Edwards was reportedly informed by a senior BBC manager about the grievance.
Emails later suggested Edwards might have influenced Rachel’s responses to the BBC.
By February 2022, Edwards faced another complaint but was reportedly informed that these meetings could have been more formal. Despite the complaints, their communication continued until Edwards was taken off air in July 2023.
His arrest came in November 2023, with formal charges being filed in June this year. Edwards recently pleaded guilty to multiple charges related to child abuse images.
Support for Rachel and Edwards’ Current Situation
Before learning of his arrest, Rachel reportedly received warnings from Edwards’ lawyers to cease communication. In response to the mishandling of her complaints, the BBC has decided to fund 12 therapy sessions for her.
Meanwhile, Edwards’ career has crumbled, and he has reportedly kept his arrest a secret from friends.
After separating from his wife, Vicky Flind, he has moved out of their family home in Dulwich.
The BBC has been contacted for further comment regarding this situation.
