The family of Umar Mahmood, a young man who recently appeared in Freddie Flintoff’s BBC One documentary, is in deep mourning following his tragic death.
Just 18 years old, Umar was involved in a horrific car accident on Tuesday in Preston, Lancashire.
The Audi A3 Sport he was driving veered off the road and crashed into trees, leading to his untimely death in the hospital.
A Father’s Grief
Shahid Mahmood, Umar’s father, expressed his profound sadness, saying, “I am heartbroken.
He was just a young lad. Losing my son is unbearable.”
Speaking from their terraced home in Preston, Shahid added that Umar’s funeral is scheduled for later today, and he will attend the mosque to pay his respects.
Despite the overwhelming grief, he noted that Umar’s mother is coping as best as she can.
The Tragic Accident
The accident also claimed the life of 16-year-old Adam Bodi, a backseat passenger.
Another 17-year-old in the car is still in the hospital as the police investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
The collision occurred on Chain Caul Way, and emergency services arrived at 10:55 PM to find the vehicle had left the road and collided with trees. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
A Rising Star in Cricket
Umar was featured in the documentary “Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams,” which aimed to give young people from underprivileged backgrounds an opportunity to shine in cricket.
Flintoff’s right-hand man on the show, Kyle Hogg, shared the news of Umar’s passing on Instagram, expressing his sorrow with a broken heart emoji.
School Tribute and Personal Ambitions
Umar, who had recently completed his studies at Penwortham Priory Academy, was remembered fondly by his school.
Principal Matt Eastham described him as “bright, studious, and well-loved,” noting his passion for geography and cricket.
Umar had dreams of becoming a geography professor if his cricket career did not materialize.
His school paid tribute to his ambition and kindness, expressing heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
Community Support and Funeral Arrangements
Both Umar and Adam will be buried at Preston cemetery this afternoon.
The Preston Muslim Burial Society has encouraged attendees to walk or carshare to the cemetery and follow the guidance of volunteers.
A spokesperson extended their prayers to the families, wishing them patience and strength during this difficult time.

Lancashire Police continue to investigate the collision and are calling for witnesses or anyone with dash cam or CCTV footage from the area to come forward.
