Amid rising interest from top PSL clubs, Asanele Velebayi, currently the captain of Cape Town Spurs, has made it clear that he remains focused on his long-term ambitions.
The 21-year-old’s impressive performances, particularly on the right wing, have caught the attention of major teams, including Orlando Pirates, as they eye him for the upcoming transfer window.
Velebayi’s Rising Star at Cape Town Spurs
Velebayi has been showcasing his potential under coach Ernst Middendorp at Cape Town Spurs, where his speed and decision-making ability have set him apart.
As the team’s captain, he leads by example, with his mature attitude and consistency making him a standout player in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
His impressive performances have led to growing interest from big PSL clubs, but Velebayi remains grounded.
Staying Focused on Growth
Despite the buzz around his future, Velebayi continues to stay focused on his current role.
In a recent interview, he explained that while he does think about the future, he refuses to let it distract him from his current responsibilities.
“I’m focused on my job at Cape Town Spurs, but I also avoid losing sight of my long-term goals,” he shared.
“I pray we succeed as a team, and individually, my goal is to break into Bafana Bafana. Seeing players like [Rushwin] Dortley and Relebohile Mofokeng achieve success motivates me to aim for the same level.”
Embracing the Journey to Bafana Bafana
Velebayi admires the progress made by his fellow young players and acknowledges that reaching the level of national team stars is a process.
He expressed his desire to join the ranks of Bafana Bafana, recognizing that achieving success at the club and national level requires patience and dedication.
“I look up to what Dortley and Mofokeng are doing, both at the club and with the national team,” he added.
“It’s something I aspire to. As a player, the goal is always growth, and I hope to reach that level as well.”
For Velebayi, the journey continues, with his eyes set on both club and national team success.
