Many Arsenal fans had high hopes during the January transfer window, especially for an attacking reinforcement.
The club was on the lookout for a boost up front, but when the deadline passed, there was nothing to show for it, despite a late offer for Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa.
However, former Liverpool player Didi Hamann has suggested that there was a perfect fit already in the Premier League—one that Arsenal missed out on.
To the surprise of many, it’s a Liverpool player who could have added a valuable edge to the Gunners’ attack.
Darwin Nunez: A Perfect Fit for Arsenal?
Hamann believes that Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez would have been an ideal addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad.
Since his £85m move from Benfica in 2022, Nunez has had a mixed reception at Liverpool, with some fans questioning his consistency.
Yet, Hamann sees his physical attributes and style of play as something that could really benefit Arsenal.
“I think the team is well-equipped, but they’re missing a centre-forward. That’s the one thing holding them back,” Hamann explained to Prime Casino.
“Nunez, for instance, would be gold for Arsenal. He’s exactly the kind of player they need.”
The Impact of Nunez’s Physicality and Speed
What Hamann highlights is Nunez’s ability to dominate defenders.
The striker’s presence on the field forces defenders to pay attention, often drawing two or three players his way.
This opens up opportunities for his teammates to exploit space, a dynamic that could have been hugely beneficial for Arsenal.
“Nunez has the physicality, the speed, and the presence that could change the game,” Hamann added.
“Arsenal is great at finding space, but having someone who can stretch the defense would make life easier for players like Saka, Martinelli, and Odegaard.”
Moving Forward with What They Have
Despite Hamann’s strong endorsement of Nunez, he acknowledged that it’s too late for Arsenal to make a move for the striker this season.
With the January window closed, the Gunners will have to make the most of their current squad.
“Arsenal still has a talented group, but without that added physical presence up front, it could be tougher to break down teams,” Hamann concluded.
