Amanda Abbington Accuses Professional Dancer Giovanni Pernice of Cruelty and Abuse During Strictly Come Dancing Rehearsals in Latest TV Scandal

Two decades ago, I strode into a room full of newspaper executives, all seasoned men of a certain age, and declared that I had just discovered a TV show that would revolutionize Saturday nights forever.

I was talking about a ballroom dancing competition, where amateur dancers paired with professionals to vie for a glittering trophy. I enthusiastically described the show’s dazzling elements—the sequins, the makeup, the live music, and the stunning gowns.

But my excitement was met with puzzled looks and a lack of enthusiasm.

Even when I mentioned that the show would be hosted by the iconic Bruce Forsyth, with his signature catchphrase, “Keeeep dancing!”, I didn’t manage to capture their interest.

I was, of course, referring to the debut of *Strictly Come Dancing*, a show so enchanting that I predicted it would overshadow Simon Cowell’s dominance of Saturday night TV.

My rave review, published under the headline “Why Come Dancing has the X-Factor,” praised the show’s refreshing departure from the harshness of *The X Factor*. I noted that *Strictly* offered a gentle escape into the world of waltzes and cha-cha, a contrast to the brutal criticism seen elsewhere. I even dared to suggest that the show’s portrayal of traditional roles—man leading, woman following—was a comforting throwback to simpler times.

However, the show has now faced significant controversy, particularly as it approaches its 20th anniversary.

The first major scandal emerged earlier this year when Amanda Abbington accused her professional partner, Giovanni Pernice, of being cruel and abusive during rehearsals. She claimed this left her with PTSD and a bruised toe.

Her numerous media interviews have led some fans to see her as trying to bring down the show.

Amanda recently shared on Channel 4 News that she experienced “humiliating behavior of a sexual nature” from Giovanni and has engaged the law firm Carter-Ruck, seeking damages and compensation for the trauma she alleges.

Meanwhile, Giovanni denies all allegations and has hired his own lawyers, arguing that the BBC failed to protect him by partnering him with someone who had openly struggled with mental health issues.

Amanda had previously spoken about considering suicide following her breakup with Martin Freeman, further complicating the situation.

The judges, too, have evolved.

The original panel—Len Goodman, Arlene Phillips, Craig Revel Horwood, and Bruno Tonioli—were known for their light-hearted critiques and warmth.

Over time, however, the judging became harsher and more technical. The show, once a joyous celebration of dance, seemed to turn into a relentless scrutiny of technique.

A Shift in Focus and Its Impact

The professional dancers have also grown in prominence, with their fame sometimes eclipsing that of their celebrity partners.

This shift in dynamics has led to a more intense, sometimes bootcamp-like atmosphere during rehearsals.

Back in the early days, perfect scores were rare. Now, they are frequently handed out, even to mediocre performances.

The show’s premise of featuring true amateurs was compromised last year when it was revealed that several contestants had prior dance experience. This undermined the original charm of watching genuine novices.

The Fallout and Future of Strictly

The inclusion of celebrity Layton Williams, a seasoned professional dancer, in the show’s cast only added to the controversy. Although his story of overcoming adversity was compelling, his background as a professional dancer created an uneven playing field.

Regardless of the outcome of the BBC’s internal investigation into the bullying claims, *Strictly* has undoubtedly been affected. The BBC faces serious questions about how it handles its contestants and professionals, questions that reach up to director general Tim Davie.

His recent statements, emphasizing zero tolerance for unacceptable behavior, ring hollow in light of the scandals.

Amanda Abbington’s legal battle promises to continue, keeping the show under a cloud of negative headlines

. It feels a far cry from the joyful days when Bruce Forsyth greeted us with his signature, “Nice to see you, to see you… Nice!”

*Strictly Come Dancing* has lost some of its original magic, and fans are left disheartened by the show’s current state.
