In a deeply painful turn of events, Beverly Bryan is opening up about the devastating loss of her husband, William.
The 70-year-old man, who had been married to Beverly for 33 years, passed away during what was supposed to be a routine emergency surgery.
The heartbreaking twist? A surgeon allegedly removed the wrong organ.
A Sudden Emergency
The ordeal began in August when William experienced sharp pain on his side while they were staying at their rental property in Florida.
The initial diagnosis pointed to an issue with his spleen.
However, according to Beverly, Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky mistakenly removed William’s liver instead, leading to fatal complications.
The Aftermath and Allegations
Beverly is now calling for both civil and criminal action, expressing her anguish over her husband’s tragic death.
She claims that William was persuaded into surgery against his wishes after being told that refusing could result in serious complications.
The law firm representing Beverly, Zarzaur Law, says that William was initially hesitant but was eventually convinced by Shaknovsky and another doctor at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital.
A Misidentified Organ
According to the Miami Herald, Shaknovsky’s error was described as “grossly identifiable” in a surgical pathology report.
Instead of removing the spleen, the surgeon mistakenly designated and removed the liver.
This critical mistake led to severe blood loss and William’s untimely death.
Discrepancies and Previous Errors
After the surgery, Shaknovsky reportedly told Beverly that William’s spleen was “four times bigger than usual” and had moved to the other side of his body.
However, an autopsy revealed that the spleen, while having a small cyst, was not removed.
Beverly is now preparing to file a lawsuit following a pre-litigation process.
Allegations of Past Mistakes
In addition to her current case, Beverly has accused Shaknovsky of another surgical error from 2023, where he allegedly removed part of a patient’s pancreas instead of the intended adrenal gland.
Zarzaur Law notes that this previous case was settled confidentially.
A Call for Justice
Beverly’s potential legal action is driven by her desire to prevent similar tragedies.
She fears that Shaknovsky’s alleged incompetence could lead to more harm if not addressed.
Despite having no public complaints or disciplinary actions against him, Shaknovsky has not faced criminal charges in William’s case.
Hospital’s Response
Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast has stated that they are taking the allegations seriously and are conducting a thorough investigation.
While they have expressed their condolences, they have refrained from commenting on the specifics of the case or ongoing litigation.
