Al Ahly, one of the most successful football clubs in Africa, seems to have a growing relationship with South African football, whether it’s due to mutual admiration or underlying tension.
This connection especially stands out with players and staff who have ties to Mamelodi Sundowns, either in the past or present.
Pitso Mosimane and Percy Tau’s Impact on Al Ahly
The bond between Al Ahly and South Africa strengthened when Pitso Mosimane, the former Sundowns coach, took the reins at the Egyptian club in 2021.
During his tenure, Mosimane led Al Ahly to impressive victories, including two CAF Champions League titles, a league championship, and a FIFA Club World Cup bronze medal.
He also facilitated the arrival of Percy Tau, a former Sundowns player, who became a fan favorite at the club.
However, despite their success together, things began to sour behind the scenes.
Tau, once beloved at Al Ahly, now finds himself reportedly on his way out, with a termination agreement thought to be in place.
Relebohile Mofokeng and Rulani Mokwena’s Potential Moves
The most recent South African link to Al Ahly came with reports of the club showing interest in Relebohile Mofokeng, although Al Ahly has since denied making an approach to Orlando Pirates for the player. Yet, the connection doesn’t end there.
According to Soccer-Laduma, Al Ahly is keeping an eye on another former Sundowns coach, Rulani Mokwena.
After his time at Sundowns, Mokwena moved to Wydad Casablanca, but his stint there hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing.
Despite some challenges, he has received strong backing from the club.
Could Rulani Mokwena Join Al Ahly?
Mokwena’s tenure at Wydad is still in its early stages, having only taken the job at the start of this season.
He’s likely focused on solidifying his position in Morocco for now.
However, reports suggest that Al Ahly is keen on making him an offer if he becomes available in the future.
With the club known for its frequent coaching changes, Mokwena’s name has surfaced as a strong candidate for the role.
Should the opportunity arise, many wonder whether Mokwena would consider making the move to Al Ahly.
