Megan McKenna has opened up about her time on Celebrity Big Brother, reflecting on the infamous Diary Room incident that became one of the most talked-about moments of her early reality-TV career.

McKenna was 22 when she entered the Celebrity Big Brother house in January 2016, shortly after appearing on MTV’s Ex on the Beach.

Speaking on Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place podcast, the TV personality discussed both the circumstances surrounding her behaviour on the show and the longer-term impact she believes reality television had on her.

Alcohol and the Infamous Diary Room Incident

McKenna recalled that alcohol played a significant role in the environment during her time on the programme.

She said she entered the house hoping to change the perception people had formed of her and demonstrate that she was more than the emotional and volatile image associated with some of her previous television appearances.

However, she said alcohol was readily provided during reality shows at the time and acknowledged that she became heavily intoxicated.

McKenna described herself as being 22 and very drunk when she made a scene, adding that she subsequently felt she had embarrassed herself.

Row Involving John Partridge and Tiffany Pollard

McKenna’s most memorable moment on the programme came after an argument involving EastEnders actor John Partridge and American television personality Tiffany Pollard.

She became highly distressed in the Diary Room and launched into an expletive-filled outburst about the situation.

Security staff were eventually called to help calm her down, and she received a formal warning from Big Brother.

The incident also generated hundreds of complaints from viewers to broadcasting regulator Ofcom.

McKenna Says Reality TV Was Different at the Time

During the podcast conversation, Cotton suggested that reality television had operated under different standards during that period.

She described older reality programmes as being closer to a “wild west” environment, contrasting them with modern productions that generally have greater governance and control.

McKenna agreed that the experience had been intense but said she did not regret taking part.

‘I Wouldn’t Change Anything’

Despite the controversy surrounding some of her appearances, McKenna said she remained grateful for the opportunities reality television provided.

She also praised the people she worked with behind the scenes, including producers and camera operators.

According to McKenna, the atmosphere inside reality-show houses could intensify ordinary disagreements because contestants were together for extended periods while being filmed continuously.

She said she believed she had generally enjoyed good relationships with the people working on the programmes, despite how her television appearances may have been perceived by viewers.

Reality TV Changed the Direction of Her Career

McKenna’s move into reality television came after attempts to establish herself in the music industry.

She was invited to audition for Ex on the Beach in 2015 following the breakdown of a long-term relationship.

McKenna recalled that she was heavily intoxicated during her audition at a nightclub, but she was nevertheless selected for the programme.

She subsequently travelled to Mexico to film the show, where she had to deal with the emotional difficulties surrounding her previous relationship and encountering someone who had been involved with her former partner.

A Rapid Rise Across Reality Shows

After Ex on the Beach, McKenna’s television career developed rapidly.

She described going on to appear on numerous reality programmes, characterising the period as a spiral of increasingly frequent television appearances.

Her Celebrity Big Brother appearance became one of the most prominent chapters of that period.

Just months after leaving the Big Brother house, she joined The Only Way Is Essex in March 2016.

She later appeared in other programmes, including MasterChef, which she described as among the more positive and wholesome experiences of her television career.

The ‘Mental Megan’ Image Followed Her

McKenna also discussed how her television appearances contributed to the public perception of her as “mental Megan”.

At one point, she appeared in an advertisement wearing a straight jacket, a portrayal that she acknowledged helped generate commercial opportunities.

However, she said the label eventually became frustrating because members of the public were forming opinions about her without knowing what she was experiencing away from the cameras.

McKenna said she eventually became tired of having her personality and emotions interpreted through the edited version of her shown on television.

Reality Television Left Her Feeling Paranoid

The former reality star also spoke about what she described as the psychological impact of years spent being filmed.

McKenna said the end of her time on TOWIE affected her emotionally and left her feeling particularly paranoid.

She has compared some of the lasting effects to symptoms associated with PTSD, although she discussed the comparison in the context of her personal experience rather than describing it as a formal diagnosis.

She explained that her friends sometimes notice that she lowers her voice when speaking and joke about what she calls her “PTSD”.

Constant Cameras Changed Her Sense of Privacy

McKenna said one of the most difficult aspects of reality television was knowing that conversations which felt private could ultimately appear in an episode.

The constant presence of cameras, she explained, meant contestants had to remain conscious of what they said and how their opinions might be presented.

She believes this environment contributed to her sense of paranoia and made her more cautious about expressing herself.

McKenna Says She Could Not Hide Her Emotions

McKenna also acknowledged that her personality made the experience particularly challenging because she considers herself someone who openly displays her feelings.

She said that even when she chose not to answer a question directly, her facial expressions could reveal how she was feeling.

Her reflections suggest that her reality-TV career gave her significant professional opportunities while also exposing her to intense public scrutiny and a loss of privacy.

After years of appearing on reality programmes, McKenna said she eventually valued opportunities that allowed audiences to see a more ordinary side of her personality.
