In a recent development, World Athletics announced on Sunday that Nigerian athlete Tobi Amusan has not been given the green light to compete in the upcoming World Athletics Championships scheduled to take place in Budapest, Hungary next week.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) had initially removed Amusan’s name from the list of participants for the championship due to an ongoing investigation into alleged doping.
However, the AFN later reversed its decision and included her name in the championship list, leading to speculation that she had been cleared of the doping allegations.
World Athletics, in response to these speculations, issued a statement on Sunday morning to provide clarity on the situation.
The statement, delivered by Nicole Jeffery, the Head of Communications at World Athletics, categorically stated that Tobi Amusan has not yet been given the clearance to compete in Budapest.
The statement emphasized that no decision has been reached regarding her case, and any official announcement about her participation would be made by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) at the appropriate time.
It’s worth noting that Tobi Amusan’s name was included in the entry list for the Budapest Championships published the previous week.
However, her participation was conditional upon the resolution of the whereabouts failure charge against her, which was brought forth by the AIU.
The AIU, responsible for upholding the integrity of athletics, has assured that a decision regarding Tobi Amusan’s eligibility will be made before the commencement of the World Championships.
Until then, her participation remains uncertain, pending the AIU’s decision.
