Tragedy Strikes Benue Community

In a devastating incident over the weekend, an 80-year-old woman lost her life as approximately 50 houses were engulfed in flames in Tse-Agubor Gyaruwa of Tsambee-Mbesev Council Ward in Gwer West Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State.

Village Head’s Account

Chief Ayatse Agubor, the Village Head, shared with journalists that the fire erupted around 10 am when villagers were away on their farms.

The tragic incident unfolded as the elderly woman, Agubor’s mother, couldn’t find assistance to evacuate her sickbed. The fire’s origin is attributed to bush burning.

Residents Appeal for Assistance

Hajia Kongo, a resident who suffered significant losses, pleaded for help after losing over 10 bags of maize, soya beans, clothes, and N110,000 hidden in the bags.

She urged both individuals and government entities to come to the aid of those affected.

Local Government’s Response

Henry Agba, the caretaker Chairman of Gwer West LGA, expressed his stance against bush burning in the region following the incident.

He announced plans to dispatch a team to assess the extent of the destruction, facilitating a comprehensive report to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
