Communal Clash in Osun State Claims Lives, Sparks Tensions

Tragic Communal Clash in Osun State

A tragic communal clash unfolded in Osun State, resulting in the fear that approximately eight individuals lost their lives on Thursday, October 5.

The conflict involved residents of Ilobu and Ifon communities within the state.

Fatal Stray Bullets

The victims of this clash were reportedly struck by stray bullets fired by security operatives who were deployed to the troubled areas.

Scores of security personnel were observed stationed at the entrance to both communities, and residents were witnessed fleeing from the conflict zones through Okini community.

NYSC Members Evacuated

Approximately 30 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) were safely evacuated from the affected communities with the assistance of security operatives.

Injuries Among Police Officers

Yemisi Opalola, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, confirmed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and three police officers sustained gunshot injuries during the clash and were undergoing treatment.

She revealed, “They ambushed policemen when our men attempted to broker peace in the area.”

Roots of the Conflict

Prince Jide Akinyooye, speaking on behalf of the Ifon community, pointed to a land dispute as a significant factor in the conflict.

He mentioned that a gazette that ceded parts of Ifon’s land to Ilobu during the administration of Rauf Aregbesola had contributed to the ongoing crisis.

The Ifon community suffered significant property damage during the attack.

Governor’s Directives and Curfew

In response to the escalating tensions, Governor Ademola Adeleke issued directives aimed at quelling the conflict.

He ordered that neither of the two communities should be present near the disputed land. The state government has taken control of the disputed territory.

Adeleke emphasized the need for leaders to come together and warned that the government would assert its authority over land matters if necessary.

Curfew Declaration

In light of the situation, the Osun State government declared a curfew in the two local government areas of Irepodun and Orolu.

This measure is intended to prevent further escalation of the communal tensions.

The tragic clash in Osun State underscores the importance of addressing longstanding disputes and maintaining peace in communities to prevent loss of life and property.
