The world was shaken by the sudden and tragic loss of Alex Kemp, a 19-year-old Williams College freshman, who tragically passed away after a skiing accident on one of Massachusetts’ toughest trails.
Kemp, originally from New Jersey, was skiing at the Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort in Hancock when the accident occurred on Monday afternoon.
Despite all efforts to save him, Kemp succumbed to his injuries the following day, leaving his family, friends, and college community devastated.
The Accident and Immediate Response
At around 2:39 PM on Monday, authorities received a 911 call reporting a skiing accident on the Cutter Trail.
This trail is known for being particularly challenging, with its steep slopes and difficult conditions, making it a “black diamond” run.
The caller reported that Kemp had gone over an embankment and appeared to have suffered severe head trauma.
Ski patrol quickly arrived on the scene, and paramedics worked tirelessly to save Kemp.
After being transported to Berkshire Medical Center and later transferred to Baystate Medical Center for further treatment, Kemp’s injuries proved to be too severe, despite him wearing a helmet.
A Bright Future Cut Short
Kemp was in his first year of college, studying political science, economics, and aspiring to pursue a doctorate in computer science.
He had been recruited to Williams College’s cross-country team directly out of Christian Brothers Academy, a prestigious all-boys high school in New Jersey.
His coach, Dusty Lopez, shared how Kemp’s positive attitude, dedication, and natural talent made him an invaluable team member, even as a freshman.
His coach described Kemp as a person who brought others along with him, inspiring his teammates with both his athletic abilities and his uplifting personality.
A Life Well-Lived in Such a Short Time
Beyond his academics and sports, Kemp was deeply involved in volunteer work.
He volunteered at iCan Bike, an organization helping children with disabilities learn to ride bikes, and at Jon Bon Jovi’s Soul Kitchen, a nonprofit restaurant that serves meals to those in need.
Kemp also took part in food drives, Little League coaching, and his high school’s investment club.
His compassion and dedication to helping others were evident throughout his short 19 years.
In a poignant passage from his college application essay, Kemp expressed a belief that resonates deeply with those who knew him: “Everyone needs someone to root for them and to remind them to always root for themselves.”
This spirit was something his peers and mentors deeply admired.
A Broader Context of Heartache
Kemp’s death is especially heartbreaking in the wake of another young life lost in a skiing accident.
Just days earlier, 12-year-old Jack Murray from Massachusetts tragically died after crashing into a tree at Cranmore Mountain Resort in New Hampshire.
Murray was skiing with his family when the accident occurred, and despite wearing a helmet and skiing on a trail appropriate for his skill level, he could not survive the injuries he sustained.
Both tragedies have left communities grappling with the loss of young lives full of potential.
Kemp’s and Murray’s stories are a reminder of how precious life is and how sudden and heartbreaking these accidents can be, even in the safest of circumstances.
Remembering Alex Kemp
In the wake of his death, those who knew Alex Kemp have shared how much of an impact he made in his short time.
From his academic success to his athletic prowess and his volunteer work, Kemp embodied a spirit of positivity and dedication.
The Williams College community, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him, will continue to remember him as someone who truly cared about making the world a better place, no matter how brief his time was.
