The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has launched an investigation into prominent religious leader and businessman, Walter Magaya, after a diploma he submitted to the High Court of Zimbabwe was called into question.
The diploma, which Magaya presented in a bid to challenge his disqualification from running for the ZIFA presidency, is now at the center of a fraud investigation after the University of South Africa (UNISA) denied issuing it.
The Disputed Diploma and Magaya’s Disqualification
Magaya, who is the founder of the Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministry, was barred from contesting in Zimbabwe’s ZIFA presidential race due to not meeting the required five O-Level passes.
However, he argued that ZIFA’s rules allow for an “equivalent educational level.”
To support his claim, he presented a National Diploma in Marketing, allegedly awarded by UNISA in 2015.
This diploma, though, has been called into question.
ZACC Requests Documents from ZIFA and the Judicial Service Commission
The ZACC has officially asked ZIFA to provide all the documentation Magaya submitted when applying for the ZIFA executive committee elections.
In addition, the commission has approached the Judicial Service Commission to retrieve records related to Magaya’s High Court case, where he contested his disqualification based on his educational qualifications.
UNISA Denies Issuing the Diploma
The controversy deepened when UNISA issued a statement on January 29, confirming that Magaya was not a student or graduate of the institution.
The university declared that any certificate he presents as being from UNISA is fraudulent.
This revelation has sparked further concerns about the legitimacy of Magaya’s educational claims.
Magaya’s Background and Public Life
Walter Magaya is not only a well-known religious leader but also the owner of Yadah Stars, a team in Zimbabwe’s Premier Soccer League.
His involvement in both religious and sporting sectors has made him a prominent figure in Zimbabwean society, but this recent scandal could damage his reputation.
