New York’s major airports are in the middle of a winter travel headache.
Heavy snowfall and icy conditions have forced ground stops at John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty airports, leaving travelers stranded and flights delayed across the region.
Flights Stalled at JFK and Philly
At JFK and Philadelphia International Airport, departing flights are temporarily halted at the gates as weather conditions worsen.
Ground stops began around 8 a.m. at both LaGuardia and JFK, and officials expect the disruption to last until at least 10:30 a.m.
The FAA reports that more than 1,000 incoming flights at JFK are delayed due to snow and ice, with average delays running three hours and 16 minutes, and some flights taking nearly five hours longer than scheduled.
Philadelphia International Airport has also felt the crunch, with over 700 delayed flights reported since the ground stop went into effect.
LaGuardia and Newark Hit Hard
LaGuardia Airport is facing major disruptions, with 101 departures delayed and 56 flights cancelled.
The airport urged travelers to check with airlines before heading out and to allow extra time for their journeys.
Newark Liberty International Airport is experiencing similar problems, with 92 departing flights delayed and 39 cancelled.
According to NYC Emergency Management, Newark departures are averaging about 170 minutes of delay due to snow and ice.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the region, lasting from Saturday night through Sunday morning.
Snowfall in New York City is expected to taper off around 11:45 a.m. on Sunday, but emergency crews continue to work across the five boroughs to keep roads and airport areas clear.
Officials are urging travelers to postpone nonessential trips, rely on mass transit if possible, and double-check flight statuses before heading to the airport.
“Don’t travel if you don’t have to,” NYC Emergency Management warned, adding that patience is key as crews respond to the storm.

On November 25, storms at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport caused average delays of 30 minutes and forced the evacuation of the air traffic control tower.
