William Haggas Plans Ambitious Australian Racing Campaign for Desert Hero Following Successful Royal Ascot Victory

British trainer William Haggas has proven himself to be a master at conquering big races, especially in Australia, and now he has some exciting plans for Desert Hero, a horse previously owned by the Royal Family.

Desert Hero made headlines at Royal Ascot in 2023, capturing the King George V Handicap in thrilling fashion.

He went on to clinch the Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood and performed admirably in the St Leger at Doncaster.

Unfortunately, things didn’t quite pan out for him last summer, and Desert Hero hasn’t raced since the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot.

However, he has been training hard, and Haggas is preparing him for a trip to Australia with several of his other horses.

The talented trainer has enjoyed success in Sydney, with multiple Group One wins under his belt.

Haggas even landed a massive win last October when Lake Forest, owned by Tony Bloom, triumphed in the A$10million Golden Eagle.

Now, Desert Hero is ready to join a strong squad of Haggas’ horses, including Al Mubhir, Marama, and Dubai Honour, for an Australian racing campaign.

Haggas Looks Forward to Royal Ascot with Economics

Closer to home, Haggas is already making plans for Royal Ascot.

One of his top horses, Economics, had a spectacular 2024 season with wins in the Dante Stakes, Irish Champion Stakes, and Prix Guillaume d’Ornano in Deauville.

Although Economics had a rough outing in the QIPCO Champion Stakes last October, Haggas remains confident in the colt’s ability to shine again in the summer, especially with top races on the horizon.

Lucky Place: A Dark Horse for the Stayers Hurdle

At Cheltenham, Nicky Henderson is cautiously optimistic about one of his horses, Lucky Place.

The trainer, known for his success at the Festival, has a strong stable this year, including the likes of Constitution Hill, Jonbon, and Lulumba, all aiming for glory.

However, Lucky Place, who has won both of his starts this season, is one to watch.

He’s currently being aimed at the Stayers Hurdle, and although the three-mile distance is a bit of an unknown, Henderson is confident in the horse’s stamina.

At 8/1, Lucky Place is a tempting price for those looking to place a bet on a potential winner in the Stayers Hurdle.

New Hurdles Prove Safer and More Cost-Effective at Cheltenham

In a big move to enhance horse welfare, the Jockey Club introduced new padded foam hurdles at Cheltenham and Aintree last year, replacing the traditional birch hurdles.

These new obstacles are designed to be safer for horses, and early results have shown a significant reduction in the number of fallers.

Not only have the new hurdles proved safer, but they’ve also helped save money.

Last season, around 100 hurdles were damaged and needed replacing, a significant expense.

This season, only 11 hurdles have been broken so far, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the new design.

A prime example occurred when Constitution Hill crashed through a hurdle at full speed during the Unibet International Hurdle in January – but miraculously, both the horse and the hurdle came out unscathed.

York’s Ambitious Growth and Elevation of Key Races

York’s chief executive, William Derby, has big plans for the racecourse.

He has been working hard to elevate the SkyBet Ebor Festival, aiming to make it the most prestigious summer meeting on the racing calendar.

As part of this vision, the racecourse will now feature a Group One race each day during the Festival.

The Juddmonte International is already a highlight of the meeting, but Derby is also pushing for the City of York Stakes to be upgraded to Group One status.

This race, along with others like the Yorkshire Oaks and the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes, will help cement York’s place as a top-tier venue.

The elevation of the City of York Stakes is just one example of the track’s ambitions.

Super Saturday on the Racing Calendar

This Saturday promises plenty of excitement in both England and Ireland, with major races like the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse and the Ladbrokes Chase at Kempton giving clues for the upcoming Randox Grand National.

But don’t forget to keep an eye on Saudi Arabia, where the richest race in the world, the Saudi Cup, will take place.

Romantic Warrior, the favorite for the race, has been unbeatable in his home country of Hong Kong.

His win would be a huge boost to Saudi Arabia’s efforts to make the event a top global fixture.

With big names like Sir Alex Ferguson’s horse Spirit Dancer winning last year’s Neom Turf Cup, a victory for Romantic Warrior would further solidify Saudi Arabia’s place on the international racing scene.
