Wedding bus crashes off Indian mountain road, killing 25

At least 25 wedding guests were killed in a bus accident in northern India after the driver swerved into a steep valley.

The vehicle was traveling down a dangerous mountain highway in the state of Uttarakhand when it veered off the road and plummeted at least 480m with 45 people aboard.

Twenty people were miraculously recovered, the state’s chief police official said AFP.

In Uttarakhand, which spans a portion of the Indian Himalayas and is home to major religious pilgrimages, fatal road accidents are widespread.

Nearly two dozen people were killed in June when their bus crashed into a canyon while traveling north of the state capital Dehradun to a shrine dedicated to the Hindu deity Yamuna.

When the vehicle went over the cliff, it was traveling along a dangerous mountain road in the state of Uttarakhand.

According to a research published by the World Bank last year, India accounts for 11% of global road fatalities despite having just 1% of the world’s vehicles.

According to the same statistic, 150,000 people per year are killed in automobile accidents in India, or one person every four minutes.

According to the report, vehicle accidents cost the Indian economy over $75 billion annually, with medical expenditures and income loss forcing many accident survivors into poverty.
