Apology from the University of South Carolina
The University of South Carolina recently issued an apology after a song by the late rapper Camoflauge was played during the No. 2 Gamecocks’ 66-56 victory over No. 5 LSU on Friday.
The song, “Cut Friends,” was played by DJ T.O. late in the fourth quarter, sparking backlash due to the song’s connection to Flau’jae Johnson, a current LSU star.
A Painful Reminder for Flau’jae Johnson
Camoflauge, born Jason Johnson, was tragically murdered in 2003, just months before his daughter, Flau’jae, was born.
He was killed in Savannah while walking with his toddler son.
The playing of his song during the game brought up painful memories for Flau’jae and her family.
The University of South Carolina acknowledged that this was disrespectful, and they responded by suspending DJ T.O. from the Gamecocks’ next home game.
The school’s statement emphasized that rivalry and fan passion should enhance the game, not target individuals personally.
They expressed regret that the situation unfolded in such a way, especially after a game that showcased women’s basketball on the national stage.
Social Media Backlash
Things took a turn for the worse when Flau’jae Johnson saw a comment on Instagram about the incident.
One commenter wrote, “playing camouflage (sic) at the end of the game was crazy,” to which DJ T.O. responded with a laughing emoji and a sarcastic “my bad.
” Flau’jae was understandably upset and shared the exchange on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “I’ll take my L on the chin, but this just nasty behavior.”
Others on social media also voiced their disappointment. One user called it “classless unsportsmanlike s***,” to which Flau’jae responded, calling DJ T.O.’s actions “lame.”
DJ T.O. Apologizes
DJ T.O. later took to X to apologize for her actions, explaining that she never intended to disrespect anyone. She acknowledged that playing the song was a mistake, especially given its sensitive connection to Flau’jae. DJ T.O. mentioned that she had played the song at other events in the past, as she is from the Lowcountry/C-Port area and has been a fan of Camoflauge for years. However, she recognized that the moment was not appropriate and took responsibility for it.
LSU’s Response and Upcoming Games
Friday’s loss to South Carolina marked LSU’s first defeat of the season, with Flau’jae Johnson struggling to score just 13 points, a significant drop from her usual average of nearly 20.
Since then, LSU bounced back with a solid 64-51 win over Texas A&M and is gearing up for a crucial matchup against Oklahoma on Thursday.
Camoflauge’s Legacy and Flau’jae’s Path
Camoflauge was a respected figure in the rap scene during the late 90s and early 2000s, releasing several well-received albums.
Flau’jae has carried on her father’s legacy, both in music and basketball.
She is currently signed to Roc Nation and even gained national attention with an appearance on America’s Got Talent.
