‘Ukubonga’: Zoë Modiga to celebrate Freedom Day at upcoming Joburg gig

Durban-born songstress Zoë Modiga entered the local music scene in 2018 with her debut album, Yellow: The Novel. The 23-track album earned her two nominations at the South African Music Awards (SAMAs).

Since then, Modiga has become one of the country’s strongest voices and storytellers. Her second album, Inganekwane released in 2020, hit number one on the Apple Music World charts.

She has collaborated with the likes of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Thandiswa Mazwai Simphiwe Dana and jazz legend, Tsepo Tshola. Modiga has also performed at some of the biggest music festivals including the Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

For her performance at the Lyric Theatre in Johannesburg, Modiga will be supported by Sthe Bhengu, Lungelo Ngcobo, Urban Nobela, BandaBanda and Ire Bolanji.

“This show is special because we have pulled through a lot as a family and being able to continue to tell our story have it affirm and celebrate others is so meaningful,” she told Eyewitness News.

“Outside of the music, I think we all be meeting at this gathering of thanksgiving on a very human level, thankful for all we have moved through.”

Taking to Instagram, Modiga said that her show is titled Ukubonga (gratitude) because it is a thanksgiving.

“The show will be happening around Freedom Day, as a “born free” there are so many layers to our lives and our stories.”
