The Met Office forecasts a period beginning with the movement of cloud and rain away from east or southeast Britain.

Moving further into the period, the likelihood of wet and windy weather persists, particularly in the south and southwest UK.

Colder, brighter interludes are anticipated in the north. Towards the second weekend, there is a chance of less changeable conditions becoming more widespread.

Following days of weather-related chaos in the UK, schools in northern Wales, Scotland, and the north-east and north-west of England were forced to close.

Temperature extremes were recorded, with Altnaharra in the Scottish Highlands reaching a low of minus 13.8C, while Exeter hit a high of 13.6C later in the day.
