The South African Weather Service (SAWS) said Tropical Storm Gombe made landfall over northern Madagascar and it is expected to enter the Mozambique Channel on Wednesday, 9 March.

TROPICAL STORM GOMBE TO REACH CYCLONE INTENSITY

When the storm hits the channel, it is expected to strengthen because of the warm sea surface temperatures (Sea Surface Temperatures) combined with the ocean’s moisture.

“Gombe is forecasted to reach tropical cyclone intensity by Friday, 11 March 2022, when it is projected to briefly make landfall over northern Mozambique,” said the weather service.

‘POSES NO THREAT TO SA’

The landfall in Mozambique is expected to be short-lived, as the storm is expected to re-enter the channel by Sunday, 13 March.

The weather service said Tropical Storm Gombe poses no threat to South Africa, at the moment. However, SAWS will continue to monitor the situation closely and issue updates if necessary.
