Trent Alexander-Arnold confirms Liverpool owners invited him to return as he joins Real Madrid in emotional Madrid presentation

Leaving home is never easy, especially when that “home” is Anfield.

But even as Trent Alexander-Arnold makes the leap to Real Madrid, he’s made one thing clear: Liverpool still has a piece of his heart—and possibly a place in his future.

In a heartfelt moment during his unveiling as a Real Madrid player, the 26-year-old opened up about his emotional farewell from the club where he grew up and the touching message he received from Liverpool’s owners.

A Warm Send-Off from Liverpool’s Ownership

Despite a rocky final few weeks—boos and all—Trent says he felt nothing but love during his last conversations with Liverpool’s top brass.

The club’s owners not only thanked him for his years of service but told him the door would always be open.

“I had an amazing conversation with the owners in the last couple of days,” he shared.

“They thanked me for everything I gave, wished me well, and said they’d have me back at any point. To hear that was just amazing.”

And considering Liverpool accepted just a £10 million transfer fee—since his contract was nearly up—it’s clear they wanted him to leave on good terms.

Fans Still Showed Up for Him

While his second-to-last Anfield appearance came with a mixed reaction from the crowd, Trent said the majority of fans were “outstanding” and supportive during his farewell.

It’s something that stayed with him—even as he stepped into a new chapter.

Though he’s now in Madrid white, he’s not ruling out the idea of returning to Anfield down the line.

That hint, combined with the owners’ words, leaves the door slightly ajar for a potential homecoming in the future.

Real Madrid Was the Only Other Option

Trent also made it clear that Real Madrid wasn’t just one option among many—it was the option.

“It was never a question of where,” he said. “It was whether to go or not to go.

But I’ve probably known for a long time that if I ever left Liverpool, the only club I’d go to would be Real Madrid.”

That loyalty to both clubs shines through—and speaks volumes about how carefully he weighed this move.

A Spanish Surprise and a Tearful Tribute

Trent wowed Real Madrid officials by delivering part of his introductory speech in flawless Spanish—just 60 seconds, but enough to impress.

He revealed he’d quietly been learning the language for several months.

During his unveiling, a video montage played showing his greatest Liverpool moments, including those unforgettable assists during the 4-0 Champions League comeback against Barcelona.

His girlfriend Estelle Behnke sat beside him, while his family—his parents and two brothers—watched emotionally.

His mother, Dianne, was seen wiping away tears by the end of the montage.

Not a Childhood Dream, But a New Challenge

Interestingly, Trent admitted playing for Real wasn’t something he ever dreamed about.

“It’s not something you dream of—it feels out of reach for most players,” he said. “When I was younger, I wasn’t thinking about this.

I just wanted to be the best footballer I could be.”

Now that he’s here, though, he’s ready to get stuck in.

“It’s a dream to be here, but there’s still a lot of hard work to do. I’m excited to get started right away.”

First Stop: Club World Cup in the U.S.

That hard work begins immediately. Trent and his new teammates are heading to the U.S. this weekend for the Club World Cup.

They’ll be staying at the luxurious Four Seasons in Palm Beach, Florida, as they gear up to face Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal next Wednesday.

It’s a fast-paced start to his Real Madrid journey—but after years of elite-level football in Liverpool, Trent looks ready to take on the world.
