A high-speed crash in Aurora, Colorado, has left a community shaken after a Tesla driver sped through an intersection at nearly 100 mph, colliding with multiple vehicles.
The crash, which occurred on Monday night around 8 p.m., resulted in the tragic death of the 26-year-old driver from Centennial.
Surveillance footage captured the terrifying moment as the white Tesla blew through a red light at South Airport Boulevard, slamming into a white SUV carrying six passengers and a nearby police car.
Tesla Erupts in Flames After Violent Collision
The impact of the crash was devastating. After striking the SUV and police car, the Tesla spun out of control and burst into flames.
The driver was partially ejected from the wreckage and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Miraculously, the six occupants of the SUV—including two adults and four children—escaped with only minor injuries. The police officer near the crash site was unharmed.
A Failed Attempt to Stop the Speeding Driver
Just moments before the deadly crash, an Aurora Police Department Traffic Officer had clocked the Tesla racing at 97 mph in a 40 mph zone.
The officer attempted to pull the driver over, but instead of stopping, the man accelerated further.
Given the increasing danger, authorities decided not to engage in a high-speed chase—a decision that, unfortunately, was followed by the fatal crash.
Chaos at the Scene as Fire and Debris Covered the Road
The crash site quickly became a scene of destruction. Dramatic photos from the aftermath show the Tesla completely engulfed in flames, with wreckage from the SUV scattered across the roadway.
The force of the impact damaged traffic lights and sent debris flying onto the sidewalk.
Firefighters and emergency responders worked quickly to contain the blaze and assist the injured.
Local resident Alison Milano, who captured footage of the scene, described the moment as chaotic. “Honestly, it was pretty harrowing.
There were cops and fire trucks everywhere. It was just pure chaos in the moment,” she told 9News.
A Dangerous Intersection Known for Speeding
Residents familiar with the area say speeding is a common issue at the intersection where the crash occurred.
Wayne Blackwell, who frequently drives through the area, admitted he’s always extra cautious. “I never rush through a red light here.
Even when it turns green, I pause and count a few seconds because you never know who’s going to come flying through,” he explained.
According to Aurora Police, this stretch of road is a known hotspot for reckless driving.
Officer Matthew Longshore revealed that in the past two years alone, nearly 400 traffic citations have been issued in the area.
Calls for Stricter Enforcement as Investigation Continues
Many residents believe aggressive driving and road rage are fueling the dangerous conditions on the road.
Prince Johnson, another local, warned, “People are just driving angry.
The speeds people hit here are insane. You have to be extra careful every time you drive through.”
Following the accident, city officials worked overnight to repair damaged traffic lights and clear the wreckage, allowing the intersection to reopen by Tuesday.
The Aurora Police Department’s Traffic Unit has launched an investigation into the crash, hoping to determine the full details of what led to the tragic collision.
This devastating incident serves as a harsh reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the need for stricter enforcement in high-risk areas.
