President Bola Tinubu has officially given his approval for a wage award of thirty-five thousand Naira (N35,000) to all federal civil servants.
This announcement came through a circular issued by the Presidency and signed by Ekpo U. O. Nta, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.
Approval and Implementation Details
The circular, which was addressed to various high-ranking officials, detailed that the wage increase was in line with a Memorandum of Understanding reached between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) following disputes stemming from the removal of subsidies on premium motor spirit (PMS).
President Tinubu’s approval ensures that each federal government worker will receive a monthly wage of N35,000, starting from September 1, 2023. This wage adjustment will remain in effect until a new national minimum wage is officially signed into law.
Funding Sources
The circular also clarified the funding arrangements for the wage increase. Ministries, Departments, and Agencies within the federal government that receive treasury funding will have their wage increases funded from the treasury.
On the other hand, non-treasury funded federal government agencies will be responsible for implementing the wage increase using their internally generated funds.
