Anambra Traditional Rulers Withdraw Three Chieftaincy Titles Conferred on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah

Chieftaincy Titles Withdrawn from Senator Ifeanyi Ubah in Anambra

The Senator representing Anambra South in the Nigerian Senate, Ifeanyi Ubah, has had three chieftaincy titles conferred upon him by Anambra monarchs withdrawn.

The announcement came through a statement from the press secretary to the Anambra state government, Christian Aburime, on Tuesday.

Aburime revealed that the withdrawal was due to the violation of the state’s traditional rulers’ code by the three traditional rulers involved.

Traditional Rulers Cite Violation of Code

The traditional rulers who withdrew the chieftaincy titles include the traditional ruler of Aguluezechukwu in Aguata Local Government Area, Igwe F.E. Ebelendu; traditional ruler of Neni in Anaocha Local Government Area, Igwe Onwuamaeze Damian; and the traditional ruler of Ojoto in Idemili South Local Government Area, Igwe Gerald Mbamalu.

According to Aburime, the action of these monarchs went against the established rules outlined in the state’s traditional rulers’ code.

Apology and Confirmation of Withdrawal

The statement from the Anambra State Government noted that the three traditional rulers issued apologies to the government, confirming the withdrawal and cancellation of the chieftaincy titles.

The titles, namely Ikemba Ojoto, Odenjiinji Neni, and Dike Eji Eje Ogu, were bestowed on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah during their respective Ofala and cultural festivals in December.

Code Violation and Suspension of Traditional Ruler

It was further revealed that the traditional ruler of Neni Kingdom, Igwe Damian Ezeani, had been suspended by the Charles Soludo-led Anambra government for conferring a chieftaincy title on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

The suspension, detailed in a letter signed by the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Affairs, Tonycollins Nwabunwanne, cited a violation of the code of conduct for traditional rulers.

Political Implications for Senator Ifeanyi Ubah

Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who recently joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), is rumored to be eyeing the state’s governorship position in the 2025 election.

The withdrawal of chieftaincy titles and the suspension of the traditional ruler add a layer of complexity to the political landscape in Anambra.
