A burglar who was caught on security camera sampling the shop’s goodies before being ‘kind’ enough to shut the door on his way out was laughed off by a burger bar.
On Monday night, CCTV footage captured the opportunistic thief strolling inside the open One Burger shop in central Darwin.
He took a swig of hazelnut syrup, which he likely thought was alcohol, before opening a can of Coke.
At times the thief appeared to be uncertain what to do next and stood with his hands in his pockets.
He even circled back to the kitchen but found no further encouragement and calmly left after spotting a cyclist outside, flicking the door lock as he went.
‘We had an unwanted visitor in our store last night,’ One Burger posted on its Facebook page.
‘We do not stock alcohol or leave cash in the premises.
‘However, he’s having a sip from our hazelnut syrup assuming it’s liquor (Bruh.. go to Spec Savers) and he’s pinching a can of Coke from the fridge.’
An employee accidentally left the shop unlocked overnight allowing the brazen thief to enter and clamber over the counter to start searching the fridge and cupboards.
The man, who who wore casual clothes and sometimes pulled a red bandana over the lower part of his face, picked out a bottle from the cupboard and had a swig.
Burger bar owner Dhanushka Marasingha told the NT News that the look of disappointment on the man’s face was plain when what looked like an alcohol bottle only ended containing the hazelnut coffee syrup.
After a bit more wandering around and fruitless searching, he went into the main area of the shop and pulled a can of Coke out of the drinks fridge.
The business noted that the thief conducted himself well, except for trying out the beverages.
‘No broken windows or property damaged and he is kind enough to lock the front door behind him on his way out,’ it read.
‘None of the secret recipes stolen. Hope he’s not allergic to hazel nuts.’
