Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has condemned a deadly strike on a shopping center in the city of Kryvyi Rih, describing the attack as a deliberate assault on civilians as emergency crews continued search and rescue operations.
According to the latest information provided by the Ukrainian leader, the number of fatalities has risen significantly since the initial reports, with at least 14 people confirmed dead. More than 100 others have been injured, including 11 children.
Casualty Figures Increased Throughout the Day
Earlier assessments indicated that five people had been killed and at least 52 wounded, among them six children. However, as rescue teams worked through the damaged site and surrounding area, authorities reported a sharp increase in both deaths and injuries.
Zelenskyy said medical personnel were providing treatment to those hurt in the attack while emergency responders remained on the scene searching for survivors and assisting victims.
Claims of Two-Wave Drone Attack
The Ukrainian president stated that the strike was carried out using attack drones and alleged that the operation occurred in two stages. According to his account, a second wave of drones struck approximately 30 minutes after the initial impact and subsequent fire.
He claimed the follow-up attack targeted emergency responders who had arrived to assist victims and contain the blaze, describing the tactic as particularly severe and dangerous.
Ukrainian Leader Calls for International Action
Responding to the incident, Zelenskyy characterized the attack as an act of terrorism and renewed calls for stronger international measures against Russia.
He argued that accountability and sustained pressure on Moscow are necessary conditions for achieving peace, urging Ukraine’s partners to continue providing support and assistance.
The Ukrainian leader also stressed the importance of strengthening the country’s ability to protect civilians from future attacks, saying additional defensive capabilities remain essential.
Tribute Paid to Victims
As recovery efforts continued, Zelenskyy extended condolences to the families of those killed and thanked emergency workers, medical personnel, and volunteers involved in the response operation.
He praised those assisting victims in Kryvyi Rih and other communities affected by the conflict, while honoring the memory of those who lost their lives in the strike.
The incident marks one of the deadliest reported attacks on civilian infrastructure in recent weeks and has intensified calls from Ukrainian officials for increased international backing and accountability measures related to the ongoing war.
